Every so often, a new band comes out that completely blows you away. Soulshake Express is that band. Their debut album “Heavy Music” is one of the most mature, intense and groundbreaking albums released this year.

"Heavy Music"
(Beatville Records)
Released November 6, 2007

In October the band sent Lumino a five-song preview of their music. While it was extremely well done, it hinted that they were capable of a lot more than what they were giving the listener. “Heavy Music” delivers the goods with 11 new songs.

Track one’s “Woman Like You” skips all the foreplay and gets right to the heavy action. Bursting guitars immediately tear through the speakers. with a style reminiscent of Wolfmother and Blur. The intense beat grabs hold of the listener and refuses to let go.

The inside cover of the album has a quote from guitar legend Jeff Beck , whose influences on the band is apparent. Though the sound could be classified as mostly rock metal, there is a faint hint of blues mixed in throughout. The band manages to break new ground while tipping their hat to the legends of old.

Just try and listen to the album without doing the air guitar - it is a nearly impossible feat. They reach perfection halfway through the album with “Gypsy Daughter.” Straying away from their norm, the band lets loose and gives all its members a prominent role in the track , pounding out riffs that are mature and passionate.

Track eight’s “Get Up” works as a sort of liberation song for those going through breakups. The song rants a bit but works well for its purpose. The harmonica solo near the end makes brings it all together.

The band currently has no tour dates set in the States, though they do travel extensively in Europe. Chicago’s own Beatville Records manages the band and will hopefully pull some strings to give American audiences their fair share of the Soulshake Express.

A lot of albums have come through the magazine in the last year; many of them hit and miss. “Heavy Music” is one of those albums that will make your jaw drop. Unlike most records, Soulshake gives the listener no chance for a breather.
