Led Zeppelin - "Whole Lotta Hype" Print E-mail

Without question, this is the year for those big reunions that we never thought would happen. First there was The Police and then the Van Halen reunion with Diamond Dave not only happened, but is going on for a second leg. Now unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you must be well aware that the biggest reunion this year to grace the stage is the rock Gods of yore, Led Zeppelin. That’s right Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Jason Bonham (the son of deceased John Bonham) played on Monday in London. So the real question is what’s the big deal?

Seriously, why is everyone going so crazy about this reunion? They are on the cover of Rolling Stone and their performance is one of the main stories this week. People from all over the world traveled to London dishing out unheard of amounts of cash just to see a two hour rock concert. Is it worth it?

Now I love Led Zeppelin and everything I’ve read and the little clips I’ve seen from The O2 concert on Monday proved they still have the chemistry and sound great even in their sixties. But it’s not like Page and Plant haven’t played in the last decade together. In the 1990’s they did two separate tours together first for the live album No Quarter and then for a full fledge studio album a few years later. There was interest but not like this. That last tour they played Chicago’s Allstate Arena the day after the Chicago Bulls won most likely their last championship in 1998 and they were awesome.

They’ve even played as Led Zeppelin since they broke up after the death of John Bonham, first at the original Live Aid in 1985 with Phil Collins of all people behind the skins. Then three years later they did it one more time now with Jason Bonham taking his dad’s seat at the Atlantic Records' 40th Anniversary concert.

So why the big fuss now? Is it just because they are calling them Led Zeppelin? That’s my only conclusion because if they called themselves Page and Plant or anything else I can not imagine there would be nearly as much excitement. Now I’m happy to see their bassist John Paul Jones finally getting the respect he deserves (and most likely the paycheck) but I’m blown away on all the hype and the money that is being thrown at this so-called one time event.

Perhaps that’s what I’m really getting at is this so-called one time event. Really? Do you really think they aren’t going to go on tour? Not to mention the show on Monday is already being tweaked and packaged for a DVD release in the near future. Now of course it’s not the same as seeing it live (unless you had the shittiest seats) but the thousands and thousands of dollars you paid for this show I can only imagine what you could have done with it instead.

So welcome back Led Zeppelin the world has missed you and bravo to the marketing machine behind you. I can’t wait for the DVD and the inevitable world tour that will surely be announced in the coming weeks or months. Of course with all of this said, don’t get me wrong I’ll be at their show in a heartbeat I mean come on it’s Led Zeppelin!

Umm, if you look at the sleeve of one of the Zep albums you own, what with being such a big fan, you will notice that they call their publishing company "SuperHype".

The fact is that they still know exactly how to rule.

The reason for the hype is the fact that Zeppelin is the greatest rock band ever! EVER!

Hilarious, well there you go that explains it all
You're an idiot.

Page/Plant was not Led Zeppelin. And the paycheck? The gig was for charity. The other shows were short sets, and they played poorly, and haven't allowed them to be released, even making a charitable donation to make up for their refusal to allow the release of their Live Aid performance when the concert went to DVD. You're one of those clueless idiots who likes to get a rise out of people by saying "what's the big deal." It's clear that this was the biggest reunion concert in the history of rock music.
Whatever

Barry seems to know it all eh. He knows that a tour is inevitable. Is that so Barry? Are you inside Plant's head? Do you have an inside scoop? Come on know-it-all. Please share.

Please just say what you are thinking....geez ouch. First off you are right I did not mention that Monday's show was for a charity that is true. But when I was mentioning John Paul Jones finally getting paid I was refering to the tour and most the DVD. Although it is possible that will go to the charity as well. It is a fact that it was shot for a DVD to be released in the future. As far as a tour? Well really, you don't think there's going to be a tour? They just announced the Alison Krauss & Plant tour and its lasting for the month of May...hmm yeah there's no time for Zep to tour. Not to mention The Cult saying they are opening for them on this so-called non-existent tour. Also the big speculation they are playing Bonnaroo. BUt you are right I'm just guessing but if I was a betting man I'd take that bet. Like I said I'm a Zep fan but the money people were paying to see them was completely insane for a mere 2 hours of your life. Now if they could have resurected John Bonham...well then maybe or even better, a time machine to see them back in their hey day then yes, I can see paying that. ANd the person that mentioned that Page & Plant sucked live did you see them? I did, the first tour wasn't that great I'll give you that. Mainly because Page wasn't playing as much guitar as he should have. But that second tour was great and had to be as equal to seeing the show on Monday. I paid nothing for that show and I didn't have to travel far to reach the United Center either. So go ahead bitch and moan at me it's fine I can take it and I'll see you at the Zep show this summer!

All sounds reasonable... Zep is great, glad they're back. But, lets be real here, the biggest reunion story of the year is still Van Halen.

Guy, if you don't know what the hype is about this Zep concert then you never will.

Simply put they ended before they were ready to end and lot of people still have never seen them. These are kids that live and breathed Zeppelin and their songs do bring the old days back. I love this band and had tickets to see tham at Olympic Stadium in 1980...now you know what happened then.
Now is my channce to see the band that influenced alot of people.
Are you starting to get it now?
Guess there must always be a contrarian
