Jingle Your Bells Sweeter The Second Time Around Print E-mail

If you weren’t at Joe’s on Weed Street this past Friday then you missed out. Lumino Magazine dropped their second annual Jingle Your Bells X-Mas concert and it was a rousing success. This year we had three bands, a tweener, Santa Claus and even two of his sexy helpers to make it a perfect winter wonderland of a night.

The night began with local favorite Sunday Morning Chameleons that have been called the best unsigned band in Chicago and they aren’t lying. The quartet hit the stage shortly before eight and proved they are worth every bit of the hype. This was the first time I caught them live and I can’t get their song “Follow The Light” out of my head. Singer Ryan Flagstad is a great frontman bouncing back and forth from guitar and piano and Ryan along with the whole band couldn’t have started the night off better.

Nice Peter who played last year we are happy to say was back again to do not one but two sets as our official “tweener”. What’s a “tweener” you ask? Well it’s the artist in between acts and Nice Peter didn’t disappoint this year. Nice Peter came out and even though had some technical difficulties stepped it up and just winged it. Improvising songs as he went along, even at the audience’s expense, proved we made the right choice. Oh and he still made time to bring out his “50 Cent is a Pussy” song for us as well. Thanks Pete for making the time to play again for us this year.

Next up was the next big thing that may sound like they are Brit-pop but they are in fact from our very hometown. The guys from AbsentStar are having a big year after signing with a major label and having their sophomoric effort producer by Grammy award winner Dan Wilson. You know Dan “Closing Time” Wilson formerly of Semisonic who’s lately been hiding out as producer and writer. Absentstar showed they were every bit the rock stars and proved that the endless touring the past few years have really paid off. What can I say guitarist Marshall Hanbury was a blast watching as he really delivered some delicious guitar licks stage left. These guys are the real deal and glad we had a chance to have them play our show before they are too big for us and we can’t afford them.

Of course many came out on Friday to see the one and only dada. Yes yes they are the dada known for the "Dizz Knee Land" song but let me tell you, they are better then their biggest hit. To be honest, never been a fan of that song or at least always thought it was a novelty song at best. But let me tell you if I was uncertain whether they were the right headliner I had no question just a few songs into their set on Friday night. I’ve always been impressed by what can come out of a three-piece band and the guys of dada have proven they were the band to close out Jingle Your Bells. Dada has been around now for fifteen years and although you may only know them as the “Dizz Knee Land” band you are missing out on a band that delivers great melodic pop songs that can also jam with the best of them. There’s a reason why these guys have such a following and their live show is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time. Let me just say we are honored you chose to play your last show of 2007 with us.

So there you have it, another year is quickly coming to a close and another Jingle Your Bells has come and gone. I thought last year was a great show but this year topped every one of my expectations. Oh and let me not forget to thank everyone who stopped by the Treehouse booth to donate their money to the no-kill cat shelter and get their photos taken with Santa and his helpers. You helped to make it a very good holiday for all the kitties at Treehouse and the photos will be up online soon.

Thanks to Dustin White, Nice Peter, Sunday Morning Chameleons, AbsentStar, dada and everyone for such a great night and see you next year.
