With all that out of the way, it’s time to talk about the artists. There was a lot going on this year but the cream of the crop ended up coming down to four artists: Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, T.I., and of course Kanye. If anyone disagrees with that I’m just going to laugh in your face because it’s so obvious why these four are the crème de la crème. These guys are moving serious weight when it comes to their music, they’re making mad bank. If they keep going the way they are now they’ll all be sitting on top of the world very soon. Bill Gates watch out!
So let’s start with Weezy F. Baby because he’s my favorite rapper of all time and this year he is killing it. And I know he did features on a ton of popular artists’ songs but that’s not even the half of it: it’s all about the mixtapes. He is SICK. I didn’t know if he could do it again after Dedication II and Tha Carter II but then came Drought 3 and he’s still doin’ it. And he is ALWAYS in the studio; Wayne raps in his sleep. He’s all over the place, all the time. I can’t even talk about it anymore.
Jay-Z is always going to be the shit and doing well but this year he had his tenth album debut at number one and that’s a big deal. He deserves his props time and time again, but I don’t really need to say anymore about him. He’s the CEO of the world, basically. We all already know about Hov.
Kanye did it big this year by trumping 50 Cent (weak!) in album sales and proving that he’s as good of a artist that he says he is and deserves a lot of credit for his lyrical ability, not just the tracks he produces. Kanye has some of the most clever, witty lines that actually make you stop in the middle of a song and be like, “Oh shit! Did you hear that?! Did he really just say that?” I have a lot of respect for an artist whose lyrics are actually thought-provoking and/or inspiring, so that’s why West has made my list.
I saved T.I. for last because I still think he has a lot of improving to do but I’m giving him props for having a HUGE following. He has at least half of the South behind him and then even more people from everywhere else in the country that have his back and respect him. He is not a studio gangster, he IS a gangster; he’s real. That deserves a lot of respect too because most rappers talk about being in the streets without actually being in the streets (not cool, stop it). I really hope he doesn’t get locked up on those gun charges! Keep your head up!
On that note, ’07 was an insanely revolutionary year for hip hop, and all the artists are finally getting to the really good stuff. If this year is any indication, then 2008 is going to be CRAZY competitive, which always equals awesome music. Get ready hip hop fans 2008 is nearly here!
