Rock to Remember: The Best of 2007 Print E-mail

With the year at an end here is a list of what I consider to be some of the greatest albums produced in 2007. To be fair there were quite a lot of quality albums released this year and quite a lot of horrible ones as well. This list represents the best of the best:

1. “Icky Thump”-The White Stripes This album proved that Jack and Meg White truly are an unstoppable combination. Endlessly inventive the band is unafraid to experiment with new sounds. I mean honestly, who would have thought that bag pipes could rock so hard? I didn’t see it coming. I look forward to any projects these two produce.

2. “Back To Black”-Amy Winehouse Amy Winehouse may be a loose cannon but she is also one of the most profound new artists to come out this year. Winehouse has a love of retro soul that penetrates through the whole album. The fact that the record was embraced by modern pop culture proves that there will always be a love of truly good music no matter what the generation.

3. “Heavy Music”- The Soulshake Express By far the greatest band you’ve never heard of. Hailing from Sweden this rock band is guaranteed to rock your socks off. The band obviously has a love affair with great guitar and it shows through in their album. Keep an eye on The Soulshake Express; in a few years they are going to be a true musical force.

4. “Sound of Silver”-LCD Soundsystem It is almost impossible to listen to this album and not have fun. By mixing together punk, funk, rock and dance producer James Murphy creates the ultimate in indie fusion. Even the lyrics are genius. Songs like “North American Scum” are filled with non-linear verses like “(so throw a party till the cops come in and bust it up/let's go north Americans/oh you were planning it I didn't mean to interrupt/sorry/I did it once and my parents got pretty upset). If anyone can make a living thinking outside the box it is LCD Soundsystem.

5. “Two Shoes”-The Cat Empire This is by far one of the most distinct albums released in 2007. The band plays a unique blend of swing, Latin and funk beats that comes together perfectly. Their stand out single “Sly” has become a radio favorite and it is easy to see why. Though they originate from Australia the band’s love of Latin flair comes through in their music. Cat Empire makes the sound all their own and just runs with it.

In the information age everyone is an artist. Thousands upon thousands of songs flood the airwaves and internet every year. The way we look at music is an ever changing process that can only evolve further. With each passing year make the same change our music does and evolve. Use this coming year to experiment and go outside of your musical comfort zone. You might be surprised what you find.
