My Chicago Faves of 2007 Print E-mail

For me, 2007 was a cultural smorgasbord. There was a lot of sampling of new sights, sounds, tastes and sensations, even if I rarely felt entirely sated.

It was a year of Stereo Action Parties, monthly events where my friends and I would turn each other on to innovative music, get drunk and dance around the kitchen. It was a year of excellent meals with my girlfriend at restaurants like Marché, Raw Bar and Café Babareeba. It was a year of CDs passed down by my editors at Lumino and of band recommendations from random acquaintances.

It was also the year that I got seriously hooked on YouTube, proving that I am old and behind a curve that my generation once forecasted. 2007 saw me going to fewer concerts and even fewer movies as I built my collection of vinyl and beefed up my Netflix queue. I guess that I was nesting; a great new apartment shared with a significant other feels comfortable, especially as another Chicago winter takes hold.

That’s not to say that I didn’t occasionally make it out of the new digs. I had a great time covering the Pitchfork Music Festival at Union Park and caught great live sets elsewhere by The Pogues, Swing Gitan, Ben Kweller and OKGO. I took in art and design at the Museum of Contemporary Art, DVA Gallery, Rotofugi and A.Okay Official. I drank at friendly neighborhood bars and browsed bookstores. I walked the streets, cursed late arriving buses and sprung for the occasional cab.

My favorite song of ’07 came from an album that I really didn’t care for. My favorite film of the year came out in March. My favorite album was by The White Stripes, but they seem to put out my favorite album every year. My favorite ’07 moment is a secret.

For me, 2007 was a buffet of enlightenment, even if the portions that I took were entirely too small.
