Randomly selected this week is praised local singer/songwriter 18-year-old Romi Lovel, who comes off looking like a mature mid-20s performer in her sexy and provocative photos, and deep, powerful vocals bellowing from her only MySpace song – “Roll Out”.
With only one song on her Space and only 8,000 plays, Lovel’s exposure is limited to her seemingly single off her upcoming 2008 album My Day, to be released on RLM Records. The song is strong but not overly catchy. This song could easily be sunk in the middle of an album, just not sure it is single quality. However, if the strength of her vocals are any sign of the strength of her other songs, I am sure there is a gem hidden beneath the other tracks the record.
Seemingly though, she does have a powerful backing, or at least a strong network of fellow musicians, which according to her Space bio includes that of Filter guitarist Geno Lenardo, who guest stars on the 2008 album.
The most provocative feature of her MySpace page is that of her photography and the strongly written biography – most likely utilized to pull in new friends willing to give this youngster a chance. Her photos, while extremely sexy, perhaps a little too sexy for a young singer, are sure to pull in a male following. Her strength of connections also shine in the photos – which include a late 2007 performance at the United Center and a photo of her arm and arm with Kid Rock.
Romi Lovel’s page has a great beginning to it, but doesn’t follow through with an ending. There is great art, but limited music. Sure, a musician can have powerful backing – including that of a graphic designer, photographer, and biography writer, but the true strength lies within the writing and sound of the music. While I randomly stumbled upon her page, as I am sure much of her 40,000-plus fans have, I would have liked to hear a few more songs to allow for full judgment or critic of this young musicians up-and-coming power.
Her bio labels her as up-and-coming with her album being, of course, “highly anticipated”, which I dearly hope to be true as Chicago is desperate for some female muscle in the music-scene. It will be interested to see just what RLM Records puts together for the young 18-year-old, and even more interesting as to what happens to her as she gets even more mature and older. She could very well be one-to-watch in the next few years on the alternative scene and if anything the female musician list.
