It’s extremely difficult to have an original sound nowadays but, if you’re going to choose one genre, why not ride on the coattails of bands like Interpol, Joy Division, and Blur. The Editors, from Birmingham, England, came to visit Friday evening at the Vic Theatre and displayed strikingly familiar characteristics of that catchy Brit-rock that has been resurrected each decade with numerous bands such as the aforementioned pop outfits. The alluringly handsome lead vocalist Tom Smith even has a voice that is eerily reminiscent of Ian Curtis.

The young and talented group of copycats, um I mean gents, played to a completely sold out crowd that spent the night singing along, emotionally pumping their fists, and slowly (or perhaps drunkenly) swaying to the music. This included various editions of the “frat boy clone”, a couple pairs of “mom jeans”, “Susan in the cubicle by the fax machine”, and even my “too cool for school” hipster friend who stated that the tickets were given to him for free and he had nothing better to do. Riiiiight. Anyway, whoever they were, those in attendance were not out of control or overly excitable, but to be fair, the Editors’ music is not overly eccentric or upbeat.
Over the top audience response was not to be expected, as the Editors had very minimal interaction with their crowd and simply played one song right after the other with few words to address their fans. It was actually a bit difficult to discern between each song, as they all sounded very similar, as well as flowed right into one another with little to no queue. At one point, a nearby attendee even started chanting “Interpol! Interpol! Interpol!” Ouch.
After completing quite a lengthy set, the boys swaggered back onto the stage to perform their 3-song encore, much to the crowd’s requests. The large crowd cheered in exaltation and subsequently dispersed. Maybe it was their heavily influenced sound or the sarcastic guy shouting their name, but my friend and I quickly retreated from the cold to her car and promptly put in Interpol’s Antics album. |
GET A NEW JOB Written by Guest on 2008-02-03 10:03:42 Aimee Quinkert shame on you. It is quite obvious you know little about music or the industry in general. Your comparisons strike me as ignorant and lazy. You can't even get the name of the band right. Coupled with the clichéd and flawed criticism it leads me to think you've never written a decent review in your life. I was at this gig and it was stunning. I've seen Interpol live too and they are nothing alike. I suggest you should head back to reviewing for the local high school magazine. | Written by Guest on 2008-02-03 10:14:16 Give the guys a break. They are an awesome band, without the intentions of being 'copycats' as you so *ahem* politely put it.
