The most surprising element of this film is the lack of actual sex. James (the always great Macaulay Culkin) and his girlfriend Heather (Alexis Dziena) are having problems in bed. Meanwhile, Ellis (Kuno Becker) and Renee (Eliza Dushku) are having problems of their own. They believe that they have reached a point in their relationship where nothing is exciting anymore, where they have become “boring”. After attending a couple’s self-help seminar, both independently realize that the best way of confronting these obstacles might be with group sex therapy. Almost the entire film involves them talking about their relationships and having the group sex, but not having it.
Following both couples independently, the viewer gets to dissect their relationships. James and Heather’s seem to be more honest and open, while Ellis and Renee look as if they might crack at any moment. It is good to see Dushku playing the meek girly-girly for once. For years, Dushku was known solely as Faith the rogue slayer on the hit television show Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Seeing her as the shy quiet time is a good change and shows how good an actor she has become. Every member of the ensemble cast does an amazing job of showing the raw emotion within each character. Acting like this, makes just about any film worth watching.
One of the toughest moments of the film is watching the couples actually complete the group sex. The camera takes a wide lens and lets the audience just watch it happen, no soundtrack just total silence. It is unwaveringly intimate and shows the power of good filmmaking.
The only real downside of this DVD is the fact that there are literally no special features. This would be the perfect film to have some sort of cast and director commentary tacked onto the disc. I can only imagine that making many of the scenes must have been rough on the actors and it would be nice to get their perspective on it.
So far First Look Pictures has consistently put out great films, and Sex and Breakfast is no exception. This film takes a lot risks that many mainstream movies would simply avoid, and deserves to be commended for it. Sex and Breakfast might be a little hard to find outside of Best Buy or Blockbuster, but it is defiantly worth your time and effort.
