Matchbox Twenty Rocks Chicago After 4 Year Absence Print E-mail

Matchbox Twenty took the stage in Chicago last weekend for the first time in more than four years, and they were well worth the wait. The band went on stage just after 9 p.m. to an eager crowd of more than 11,000 screaming fans, and they packed the next hour and a half with the same loud rock that made them famous in the '90s.

The night started out with an up-and-coming band from New Orleans called Mute Math. Their energy and showmanship was impressive, and between the drummer's Keith Moon-like antics and the singer doing somersaults off the keyboards, there was never a dull moment in their set.

Soon after, there was a high school flashback as Alanis Morissette came on stage. Other than the guilty pleasure of singing along to old hits such as "One Hand in My Pocket" and "Ironic" 10 years past their prime, the performance was decent. There is no doubt Morissette can sing beautifully, but her ability to write new songs that have a melody faded in the '90s.

The anticipation grew for Matchbox Twenty. Finally, "How Far We've Come" rang throughout the stadium as the band opened, and for the next 90 minutes they played classics like "3 a.m.," "Real World," and "Back 2 Good," as well as new hits from their album "Exile on Mainstream." Lead singer Rob Thomas sounded strong, and you could hardly tell that Matchbox Twenty took a hiatus, judging from their apparent ease on stage. The evening performance was perfect from song section, to stage lighting, to even the friendly banter between songs; the night had everything a Matchbox Twenty fan could hope.

From the beginning all the way up to the end, the crowd embraced the band with shrieking cheers, flickering lighters, and bellowing chants even as they walked off stage. Even though it’s confirmed that Rob Thomas will spend much of 2008 working on his second solo album, let's hope there's not another four-years until the next Matchbox Twenty album or tour.
