MySpace Local Review - Karl Ostby Print E-mail

Don’t judge a book by its cover. That’s the best way to introduce this MySpace review. While my rating is at the highest point possible, there is a lot of explaining into why I came to the conclusion, after constant switching, to award Karl Ostby with a perfect rating. Let the Space review voyage begin.

I really enjoy the randomness of reviewing MySpace pages. I enjoy randomly bumping into a page and being pleasantly surprised with the creativity of the musician I stumbled upon. This week, well, is no different. This week I randomly bumped into a guy named Karl Ostby who seemingly has recently moved to the Windy City to pursue a career in music. In fact, as his bio states, he is currently looking for a band. That’s right, he is a solo artist looking the break big.

As you listen to his tunes, you might hear some potential, but the sound quality is shaky to say the least. The first song, “Won’t Let You Go”, which has achieved all star status with 1,786 plays, the most for his site, and probably because it is the first song. Bluntly, I wasn’t impressed with the tune. In fact, I thought it sucked. The quality was poor and it sounded amateur. But then, I read his story.

Karl Ostby is a solo guy. A kid with a dream. A guy who sat in his parent’s basement, on a cold Wisconsin night, and recorded these songs solo.

So, after reading that, suddenly I was impressed. And the second tune, “K”, which hasn’t turned on the same amount of fans, with just 352 plays, was much better. In fact, most of his other songs were decent. Perhaps that was because suddenly I was impressed that a solo guy – a Wisconsin guy with a dream – could move to Chicago and take his shaky skills and master them into the shape of a band.

His songs continue to improve, and his unique, distance scratchy, edgy, alternative indie voice could work perfectly on an EA Sports mix, or as a part of an XGames soundtrack. “Falling Apart”, “Yours”, “Waste My Love”, and “Somewhere Else”, tell the tale of a lost soul – both musically and in love – but this kid, in the windy city, could be on his way to something decent.

Do I smell a Double Door gig?

To help him out, this is Lumino’s personal advertisement. Go listen to him, and perhaps you will be intrigued to jump on his bandwagon as either a drummer, vocalists, bassist, guitarist – whatever. He has balls, and that’s a start – and well deserving of a perfect rating, because his Space is definitely entertaining.

Also, I must say, it was his rock star photo and rock star layout that first brought me onto his site. While he could definitely use some touching up musically, this guy has the look, the feel, the art to become a true rocker. Now, all he needs is a band.
