Redwalls: Dylan, Beatles & more Print E-mail

Being a music fan in Chicago, I kept hearing people talk about the Redwalls, and how they were good, and how I should check them out. Hounded by the band’s publicist as well, I accepted an advance copy of “De Nova,” the band’s second full-length release.

Meanwhile, before I took time to play the disc, I was listening to WXRT and heard a song that was so cool I listened to it from start to finish, a rarity for me. The singer sounded like Bob Dylan with a modern-rock backdrop of guitars. I thought it must be something from one of Dylan’s recent CDs, and that I’d have to dig it up and buy it.

But then, the DJ started talking about the Redwalls. I assumed they were up next. But when he said the song title, “Thank You,” I realized I already owned an awesome new CD from Chicago’s own.

“Thank You” is by far the best track on the disc. It’s like a melding of Dylan and the Beatles. “Hung Up On The Way I’m Feeling” is another winner. Following closely behind are “How the Story Goes” and “Love Her.”

“De Nova” rocks, with only a few struggles, like “Rock & Roll,” which would sound better on the “That Thing You Do” soundtrack. It’s one of a few points where the Redwalls take a Beatles impression too far. However, when any band uses the blueprint that the Beatles set forth, instead of Pearl Jam, the Ramones or Metallica, it’s not a bad place to start. And the Redwalls have the talent and creativity to turn sound original and explosive.

“De Nova” seems like a prelude to a break-out album. But with an upcoming tour with Oasis, I’m betting sooner than later the Redwalls will be on the charts.
