Those lucky enough to see it in theaters got a glimpse of its cinematic genius. On DVD the viewer can appreciate it on many more levels. As the title implies, the landscape is an essential part of the film and while it may have been beautiful on the big screen, it absolutely pops when it’s crystal clear. The clear blue sky and expansive desert take on more character through the filter of the DVD and especially with blu-ray.
Though the disc released this Tuesday only contains three featurettes it should be that, like the Coen’s themselves, a lot gets covered in a short amount of time. Clocking in at around one hour the features give the viewer just enough insight to realize the film is a classic without giving away too much.
Fans of the Coen brothers should check out the “Working with the Coens” feature. Though it is relatively short the viewer gets an inside look at what it is like to work for the Coens. Unlike other Hollywood features, the cinematographers interview everyone from the major actors to the engineering crew. Many have been working with the brothers for years. Each person interviewed seems to have an amazing amount of respect and admiration for the brothers and their craft. It is easy to think of the film crew as something of a family.
The one feature that did seem a bit out of place was the “Diary of a Country Sheriff”. Much of the information within the feature was insightful and reflective but seemed almost too much. The good thing about a Coen brother’s film is that it allows you to think for yourself. Too much overanalyzing on the part of the production company, muddles original thought. This may be a first for a Best Picture winner, but less special features would actually work better with the film. However, some form of commentary track by the brothers would be a nice touch given the classic stature of the film. It would have also been a nice bonus addition on blu-ray, since the extras are exactly the same as on the standard DVD edition.
Whether this film is your first venture into the strange land of the Coen’s or you have been a fan since the beginning, you need to go out and buy this film. Many of today’s movies are quirky and different, but few mark their territory as a classic the moment they are released. Make no doubt, “No Country for Old Men” is a certified cinema classic.
