What do you do after you’ve had one of the most successful sitcoms of all time? Well first you do nothing, then you go back on the road to do stand-up and then you make your own animated cartoon. That’s the path of Jerry Seinfeld, who co-wrote the story about a Bee that wants to be all he can be. Bee Movie premiered last year at the Canne film festival and is a warm, funny and wonderfully animated feature for the whole family.

Jerry Seinfeld plays Barry Bee Benson, Barry has just graduated from his three days of college and is now ready to pick his career that he will do day in day out, until the day he dies. The thing is, Barry Bee isn’t happy with the list of his current options of occupation. So Barry Bee joins the pollen jocks, the rock stars of the bee world, to experience what’s outside of the hive.

Once in the real world, Barry Bee breaks the one important Bee rule - “Never talk to a human”. Barry meets Vanessa Blome (played by Renee Zellweger), a pretty New York florists and so begins their unusual friendship, to the chagrin of Vanessa’s boyfriend, Ken (Patrick Warburton).

Through their relationship, Barry discovers that humans have been stealing their honey and realizes his true calling is to sue mankind. Unfortunately there are side effects, by the end of the film we realize whether its humans or even bees, we all have a part to play for a harmonious balance to the world.

If you’ve missed the film in its theatrical run, never fear it’s now here on DVD in three different options. You can pick it up on as a single disc, a “Very Jerry 2-Disc Edition,” or on HD. Unfortunately as you can see, one of those options is not blu-ray. Dreamworks, like a few other studios, were HD exclusive and because of this, their films are not offered in the blu-ray format. One can only imagine how the studios are kicking themselves for not predicting the market. But with that said, the recent release of American Gangeter did quite well on HD. Not bad for a format that is dead and consumers will eventually have to repurchase it on the winning blu-ray.

The “Very Jerry 2-Disc Edition” is worth the extra cash to get more Jerry and more goodies from this very funny movie. On disc one or “More Jerry” disc, we have the film with an optional commentary from Jerry and everyone from the editor, director and writers of the film. As I’ve always expressed, I love commentaries especially when they are from the creative team. This commentary gives us insights on many ideas and story arcs that never happened. Including a narration by Monty Python’s own Eric Idle that would have been a whole different movie. Nuggets like theses, makes watching the movie a second time a whole new experience.

Also on disc one, we have alternate endings and lost animated scenes. These are all available in rough sketches and were never completed in the final animation. So these are a little misleading but it’s the voices that still make them worth checking out.

If that isn’t enough, you have Jerry’s live-action trailers, TV Juniors (16 little shorts promoting the film), a documentary on Jerry’s promotion of the film at the Canne, and a documentary on casting the film. I can't recomend these extras enough. Do yourself a favor and invest your time.

On disc two or “More Barry,” we have even more goodies for you to buzz around. They include music videos, games etc. To be honest, other then the documentary on the Tech of Bee Movie, everything on disc two is really for the kids. It’s too bad they couldn’t have squeezed the Tech of Bee Movie onto disc one. Regardless, if you have kids then be sure to peruse disc two.

So if you are a Jerry Seinfeld fan, then you will love Bee Movie. To me, Jerry Seinfeld has a hilarious perspective of life whether it’s with humans or in this case, a bee. His delivery and expressions always makes me laugh. Probably my favorite extra in his whole collection has to be the 16 TV Juniors, mainly because it’s actually Jerry himself on the screen. So do yourself a favor, pick up the “Very Jerry 2-Disc Edition” and don’t cheat yourself by skipping the extras.
