MySpace Local Review - The Frantic Print E-mail

When doing reviews of bands that haven’t yet hit it big, and by big I mean sell out major Chicago music venue big, it’s easiest to describe their sound in connection points. The Frantic is a good mix of Disturbed and Fall Out Boy – what can be coined as punk pop. A little bubble gum and a little shot gun. Raw, yet sweet.

Get the picture?

Instantly, when stumbling upon The Frantic’s Space, I was thrown for an interesting pause. Was that really “Build Me Up Buttercup” that I was hearing? Was that really a twist on an older poppy classic that brought it into real time with edge? Obviously, I wasn’t the first to trip over this song, as it has achieved solid plays of more than 37,000. I will say I do like when bands use a cover in their catalog, especially when they twist the cover around a bit to make it an original. Covers can connect fans instantly, because rather than trying to fall in love with a song, they are instantly hooked onto lyrics they can sing along to. Given, the lyrics are much rougher than the original, but, nonetheless entertaining to shout out with.

While this song wouldn’t land them in the top 12 on American Idol, the song is good enough as a landing point for fans who stumble upon their Space – intending to build the fan base through a grasswired (my new word for grassroots internet campaign) campaign. However, a band must have another selling point. While lead singer Kyle Dee does a nice job on “Audio and Murder”, a song off their album (31,326 plays) with the same title released in 2007, I was much more impressed with “I Don’t Want to Be Alone”, a song that has collected 27,030 plays on their space.

Their last song, “Hollywood Homicide” was decent, let my good backing from The Frantic’s other players Chris Farnesi, Ian Farnesi, and Brett Hartwell. This song carried the least amount of plays, racking in 22,271.

As for the band’s Space creative, they get an A+. I truly believe there is a reason behind why they have been voted best new band of 2007 and a top 100 band to watch in 2008 – that’s because they are the full package. Listen, you can have great lyrics and great music, but if you cannot market your band or don’t know how to or don’t invest the funds – then unless you are as lucky as a lotto winner, you better check out a career asking if “you want fries with that.” Now, if you are smart enough, or have a good backing, like that of The Frantic’s indie label Sinister Muse, then you are on your way.

The band clearly promotes that their live show kicks the shit out of their recorded sound – and if that’s the case, then these guys could very well be on their way to leading a similar life of that of a blink 182. And for those of you impressed with their sound, their look, their logo, their pictures, and their drive – you will have two opportunities to check these guys out in the near future – April 1 at Reggie’s Live or April 27 at Subterranean.

And for all you grungy boys who are looking for that perfect tattooed, black haired girl – check out the band’s friends. Pretty much all of them are hot – and one of the above shows could be just your way to break into their Space’s.
