First time Taste of Chaos openers, drummer Matt Traynor and guitarist Mike Frisby seemed excited (although mildly sick) and hopeful about being on tour. “Things have been fun, but stressful,” says Traynor. “But we have been getting into trouble,” mentions Frisby, “just stupid little things.” What else would you expect from the youngest band on the Taste of Chaos tour?
But these 19 and 20 year olds have left an impressionable mark on audiences and other bands alike, with their powerful and intense sound. “We have something to prove,” says Frisby. “Most of people come out to see the headliners like Bullet for My Valentine and Avenged Sevenfold.” Traynor jumps in and says, “We were surprised to see that Detroit has been our best city yet; Great crowds, positive feedback and more fans.” They must be doing their jobs right if Detroit fans have recognized these mid-west Arizona guys.
But what sets Blessthefall apart from other bands in their hardcore rock genre like Aiden and Lovehatehero? Is it their energy, style or crazy “Wall of Death” mosh pit? “Okay, the “Wall of Death” mosh pit started during Warped Tour. One of us just screamed it out and the kids went nuts!,” recalls Traynor. “Who doesn’t like to see kids get involved, bash their heads in and get bloody,” says Frisby jokingly, as he laughs.
The band’s use of double bass petals, force and energy is what draws the listener in. Not to mention, Blessthefall was the only band that literally jumped off stage and got into the crowds face during their set. A few hints of pop sounding background music and insane drumming while incorporating screamo lyrics sets the band apart. Although some words are not distinguishable between the chorus, both Frisby and Traynor can agree that their lyrics are “emotional and Christian based.” Frisby goes on to say, “We actually have lyrical substance to most of our songs.”
So is it round two on the 2008 Warped Tour for Blessthefall? Unfortunately, no. They were asked to return, but right after Taste of Chaos is completed, the boys will head back to the studio to make a follow-up album to their first record His Last Walk. Frisby says, “We plan on recording during June and all of July.” Should we be hearing a new sound from Blessthefall? Oh hell no. They are sticking to their roots, but “would like to make a more cohesive album this time around,” says Traynor. Once the album is completely, the boys of Blessthefall plan on going on tour again or possibly play the Product Red show at the end of the summer.
Either way, Blessthefall has definitely put their foot down in the sand of the hardcore pit. Their sound is unique and their live style is recognizable. Fan of Atreyu and editor of collegenews.com, Yoon Kim said, “Omg, they stole the show and I don’t even know who that is,” after watching their set Tuesday night.
