In the spirit of randomness, I couldn’t ignore this week’s artist simply because his specialty isn’t lyrics or musical talent. In fact, his talent is in the remixing of sounds – the man behind the music. DJV is a Chicago DJ who consistently scores gigs at Radiostar, and has successfully found a way to capture a strong audience through his space, as evidenced by his comments and his friends providing thumbs up reviews of his gigs.
While musicians can bank on pure talent to drive their fan base and gigs, DJs have to focus on their art and the creative and imaginative pulse behind their art. They have to be more marketers because that’s the only way they are going to be able to make a living – or build a name in the very competitive world of spin doctors.
I will be the first to admit, I am not huge into the club scene and the music that presents its self courtesy of America’s finest DJs, so, my review of the music is going to be skewed and probably not as accurate as those who dive into the scene as a way of life. However, on first judgment, DJV is not too bad, catchy and seemingly understands the importance of marketing his art and building an identity for himself as a DJ to help distinguish himself as a leading Chicago DJ – at the top of the pack.
His two part “Juke A Licious” one leading with an “Intro” and one with a “Preview”, is DJVs top performance, collecting 49,066 and 11,792, respectively. Also earning a top notch is “My Sunglasses”, which has earned the Chicago-DJ 22,999 plays. Wrapping up his other songs are “Havin Sex”, which has earned 25,412 plays and is pretty self explanatory as a song, and “Fuck Techno”, which is much of the same.
As for the art on the page, the Space is backgrounded with a beautiful artistic image of Chicago – highlighting this DJs roots, and his photos are solid, including the staple for a DJ – bragging rights photos of him with other area DJs.
Again, I am not exactly sure what I look for in critiquing a DJ, but my bottom line is that if I can dance to it, and it makes me want to bump and grind, the music is good with me. Solid work DJV, I just may take a trip to club to check you out.
