Local graffiti enthusiasts packed the small gallery space at Lakeview’s A.Okay Official recently for the rare sneaker/designer toy emporium’s first official art show. More than forty All City Style blank train cars (courtesy of Bigshot Toyworks) were customized, tagged, mangled and made beautiful by some of the brightest lights on the national urban art/graffiti scene.

20-inch model trains lined the walls as attendees jockeyed for position in A.Okay’s cramped backroom. The fat lines, gothic lettering and panel pieces favored by old school graff writers bumped up against the skull faces and anamorphic animals ubiquitous in the world of designer toys. Chicago-based illustration and design studio Yunicorn, offered a unique take on the train form by melting its model into a twisted blast of abstract wax. Local prankster Solve built a black clay façade on his 20-incher, to depict anguished faces peeking out of a rush hour purgatory. Up-and-comers Peabe and Yoink! represented the new school with a serene depiction of Adam and Eve chillin’ with some of God’s creations (Peabe) and a striking skull and squiggles mural in black, white and pink (Yoink!).

A.Okay Official owner Jason Uzarraga first became interested in mounting the Chicago Train Art show after finding that similar shows had been staged in New York and LA. “I wanted to combine the styles of graffiti writers and urban artists,” said Uzarraga. “When you combine the two worlds, something unique comes out.” The event was an unqualified success for the fledgling boutique/gallery. A number of pieces were sold, DJs St!zo and Intel served up beats and, while a beer or two might have bitten the dust, the cleanup wasn’t too bad. “It was a crowd that I wasn’t anticipating,” said Uzarraga. “It was great to see the people of Chicago in tune with this type of style.”

Yesterday's Chicago Sun Times reported that local artist Solve was killed over the weekend. May he rest in peace.
