Had someone slipped something in my last drink, or had I just smoked a ton of weed, MiLkBabY could have had a longer lasting affect on me. For hippies, druggies, or any other type of ies you can think of, this Chicago band from Berwyn could be a great added flavor to your music connection. For me, I will limit my experience to 30 minutes of listening and exploring on the band’s psychedelic imaginative space.
From the looks of my rating of their Space, their music and their creativity, you may think this band really can’t be all that bad if I gave it a 4-star artistic rating. And you would be right. I am mesmerized, yet very confused as to what I was listening to and experiencing. From the looks of their video, it seems like concertgoers would have a similar experience in person.
I am sure a good handful of their 567 fans will make an appearance at 10 p.m. March 28, 2008 at Reggies, and I am sure plenty of other psychedelic, experimental music fans may join in for the fun, too. Again, had I been able to get a better grasp on what was going on, perhaps I would have been there too.
Again, though, simply because I didn’t find their Space and music entertaining, doesn’t mean I cannot find a positive in what Barry Bennett, Darren Shepherd and Sophie Senard are doing. It is creative and artistic. It’s deep, and exploratory. It’s probably considered by many to be an experience, especially since the band has been around for 10 years. My art rating must have an asterisk next to it though, because their photos and Space is not creative, but I couldn’t diminish the rating simply because everything else is creative.
I have talked a lot about the marketing and image building bands need to do to build brand awareness. I think MiLkBabY is definitely one of those bands that could use some assistance on its marketing. It needs to put a little more effort into its space and make it an experience – especially if they are pushing the live show as one. When the background is standard white and it has live videos piled on top of each other, and the friend list caps at under 1,000, the band needs some work.
Again, though, looking at the potential positive, the trio has something that is marketable – difference.
While I didn’t get the songs, and couldn’t really get into the experience while listening over my computer, I am sure the live show packs a better punch. On their Space, “up on the television” led the band’s attention, with 1,143 plays. A plus is the fact that the band has six active songs, much better than the standard four. “wasteland” (116); “our autumnal” (515); “smiling” (30); “we got ways” (236); “queen’s query” (163) wrap up the Space set list.
Does this band deserve a chance? Absolutely, especially since they have beaten standard odds of shelve life by crossing the 10-year-mark. And just because they are not my cup of tea doesn’t mean you won’t find a connecting point.
