Top 10 CDs of summer Print E-mail

June, July, and August are huge months for the music industry. Between concerts and new albums, it all happens now. Since summer ends in the eighth month of the year (and not because these are the albums we’re looking forward to the most, honest) here’s the eight your iPod can’t be without:

‘Be,’ Common : Smooth, relaxed, with thought-provoking rap verses and some polishing from fellow Chicagoan Kanye West, it’s you cruising in the car with the moon shining through the sunroof, or the rhythm that puts you to sleep when it’s 90 degrees in the shade. Smooth.

‘Don’t Believe the Truth,’ Oasis : It really has been 10 years since the band released a decent album. Fans will be rioting in the streets. Bad boy brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher have brought you some delicious, moody tracks for rainy days and the day your summer fling leaves to go back to school, that bitch.

‘Monkey Business’, Black Eyed Peas : These months are about having fun and getting rowdy, which seems to be the whole reason of being for the B.E.P. If this year’s release is anything like last summer’s ‘Elephunk,’ expect a soundtrack for summer antics and some beats that practically drag you onto the dance floor.

‘Minimum-Maximum,’ Kraftwerk : A lot of people think summer gives them a license to listen to crappy euro remixes of Bryan Adams tunes. If you’re going to listen to dance and electronica, at least do it with some class; ‘Minimum-Maximum’ is live, and the tracks are some of the best from Kraftwerk’s recent performances.

‘Illinois,’ Sufjan Stevens : Because all the cool kids are listening to his music. Because (as far as I know) no one has made a soundtrack of the ghost neighborhoods and hospitals that make up Chicago and the stupid goat that cursed the Cubs. Because Sufjan can play instruments you’ve never even heard of. Because inevitably, someone will ask you what you did this summer and you need to be able to tell them you expanded your musical horizons.

‘Wedding Crashers Soundtrack’ Various Artists : Death Cab for Cutie, Jimmy Eat World, Guster, and Bloc Party all in one place. Indie kids, rejoice! And for the rest of you, the movie stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson and looks hysterical. It’s the perfect soundtrack for your own crazy antics.

‘Late Registration’ Kanye West : Last year’s ‘College Dropout’ gave us the summer’s biggest anthem- ‘Kanye’s Workout Plan.’ Whether you’re into his mixing and melodic talent or need new advice, this album shouldn’t disappoint. Drops late in the summer, though, so you’ll need…

‘10 the Hard Way,’ Outkast : Big Boi and Andre 3000 are like those guys everyone invites to a party just to see what they’ll do. This June they’re back together to ensure your car speakers are heard (and felt) at least half a mile away.
