He didn’t play for long, it wasn’t ridiculously loud or dramatic, and there weren’t any special effects. So what, you might ask, was there? There was Brian Mazzaferri, his guitar, and bassist Hari Rao and drummer Packy Lundholm who go by the name of - “The Noticeable Improvements.” (Or at least they did this evening. Word has it that Mazzaferri renames his band mates at each show just for the fun of it.) And that was all that was necessary for half an hour of excellent music, with catchy melodies, and lovely lyrics.

Mazzaferri, a local Chicago musician, released his debut album, “All Roads Lead to Roads” in late 2007. Since then, it’s been slowly finding its way through Chicago and all the way to L.A., where half the tracks were licensed by a company called Songs with Vision, for possible use in films, games, etc. Mazzaferri has been performing in and around Chicago and on this particular evening, he was the first of five bands at the Elbow Room. The crowd wasn’t huge and listeners that came in for later bands, missed Mazzaferri’s excellent, simple performance.
Bedecked in jeans, t-shirt, and an “I love to read” button, Mazzaferri sang his songs in an easy way, his voice flexible and clear, matching his folk style guitar skills. Betwixt the songs from “All Roads Lead To Roads,” Mazzaferri threw in a cover of “Power of Love” by Huey Lewis; the title of which he didn’t announce and the fact of which drew smiles from those that were able to recognize it, through Mazzaferri’s artful rendering of the power pop song of the 80s. It gave one cause to believe than any song placed into Mazzaferri’s hands might be turned into a work of musical loveliness. He also played “Not I,” a sadly sweet new song that he has yet to release
Although it was short in time, Mazzaferri’s performance was short on nothing else.
For those of you that missed Brian Mazzaferri’s performance, he’ll be playing again at the Rock and Ride Earth Day Benefit Concert at the Double Door on April 20 at 8 p.m. All the proceeds go to the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation, which helps Chicagoans lower their carbon footprint by making the city more bike-friendly.
