MySpace Local Review - Sarah VonderHaar Print E-mail
Written by NICK POWILLS

While her 15 minutes of fame could have came crashing to a close after her stint on “America’s Next Top Model”, Chicagoan Sarah VonderHaar is still kicking and screaming – model-style – with the release of her upcoming April 22, 2008 debut album release, “are you listening now”. And, to top it off, the local musician – who can be seen all over the Windy City with a multitude of local concert dates – has a pretty solid MySpace page, which supposedly is updated and maintained by the queen, herself.

VonderHaar is utilizing social networking to elevate her popularity, and is maximizing the fan base she built on reality TV as the basis for launching a career – SMART. Far too often I see reality stars not utilizing the publicity and marketability of their reality experience, which if not done will never prolong those 15 minutes.

As for VonderHaar’s sound, it’s actually pretty good. Her lead Space song “I Got Sunshine” has already accumulated 102,104 plays – which probably carries some residual from her Top Model days, but nonetheless a good, clean sounding song. The rest of the album is very mellow and sharp, with songs like, my favorite, “Song To Me To Sleep” achieving 44,965 plays – still not too bad.

I have also argued the need for artists to display as much of themselves on their Space, including a good variety of songs. VonderHaar has six songs, including “It’s Not the First Time” 74,929 plays; “Over Your” 9,359 plays; “All Mine” 50,327; and “Just Go” 60,420. She does a nice job at promoting the launch of her album through her social networking – and even writes that she hosts a Live Journal as well. When you are an artist, guerilla social network marketing is important; when you are a reality TV star too, it is essential. VonderHaar, or her marketing/publicity team, certainly understands this importance and is utilizing her site well.

And diving even deeper into her marketing, the artistic layout of the site is designed to push and advertise the album release as well. She does a nice job of including information about her career, Top Model, and her album. She also has plenty of great photos – and it certainly doesn’t hurt that she is hot, too.

I see great things for this Chicagoan – especially since she understands the art of marketability – or someone in her camp does.

And, for those of you wanting to see Sarah live, two big dates are in her near future – April 11 at US Beer Company and May 17 at Goose Island Wrigleyville.
