Copycat is the name of the game. We are stuck in a musical situation, where many bands mimic others, but still try to create their own sound. After a while, everything just seems to blend in and it’s hard to distinguish a band from their genre. In the case of Tapes ‘N Tapes who played to a 21 and over crowd at the Metro Friday night, it would be copycat of the Killers… hands down, I would have rather seen the Killers.

Headliners and promoting their new album Walk It Off, the guys of Tapes ‘N Tapes, Josh, Matt, Jeremy and Erik, created a “chillax” atmosphere for their fans. With an Explosions In The Sky meets the Strokes, these Minnesota natives some how managed to sing with a British accent. What is wrong with this picture? Granted their beats and rhythm made a very ‘weed’ essence vibe, yet it was hard to look past the whole British accent. Still, the crowd didn’t seem to mind.
The reaction to their Indie-pop music was positive and definitely showed in the dancing among the mature crowd. Maybe it was the Miller Lites and Jagerbombs that filled the air, but the drunken atmosphere at the colorful Metro masked the mundane and repetitive sound that is Tapes ‘N Tapes. Almost every song ended with a strong halt and was very typical. The pattern of the guitars and drums sounded similar to every song and after a while I just tuned out.
A few of their songs they played like “Le Ruse” and “Hang Them All,” displayed a very poppy style. Appealing? Sure. But by the end of their long hour and half set, their show blended together and was for me just a waste of time. And like mimicking isn’t good enough, towards the end of their set the keyboardist pulled out a trumpet and played along with the rest of the band. The Killers song “Bones”… is there a trumpet? Hmm… yes.
Perhaps it’s just me and I am not meant to understand the appeal of Tapes ‘N Tapes. Music is truly an acquired taste and for me Tapes just spooled out of the deck and into mediocrity. You can be the judge and listen yourself at www.myspace.com/tapesntapes Powered by AkoComment 2.0! |
