It’s a damn shame to change your style just because mainstream music would say it’s ‘cool,’ but apparently being 7 years old, dressed in black from head-to-toe, dolled up with eye-liner while holding up the rock sign would say otherwise. Good thing Congress Theatre was jam packed with a wide variety of ages during the My Chemical Romance show last Thursday, because if not, the concert would have been classified as a MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 minus nine years.

The New Jersey boys of My Chemical Romance kicked off an energetic show that gradually wined down to a more melancholy night with a black, red and white light show that rained over the high circular ceiling of the venue. Starting off with old songs from their first album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, lead singer Gerald Way was stationary behind his mic the entire set while singing many songs like “Helena” and “To The End.” It was odd to see the other band members, Frank Iero, Mikey Way, Ray Toro and Bob Bryar outperform their lead singer, who should technically be the front runner.
Of course the song that made them famous, “I’m Not Okay,” rang clear through their set, while the 10-year-old girl standing to my right screamed out, “I’m not okay, I’m not o-Fucking-kay.” And the mother standing with her shunned me for having a cocktail.
Besides being one of the three people in the venue with a drink in hand, the concert had a surprising twist and I’m not talking about the mid-set jumping jacks Way performed. Introducing many new songs from their recent album The Black Parade, simple pattern of the song “Teenagers” was played. But it was the song “Welcome to the Black Parade” that set a different dramatic tone of the night.
From there, Way sang a long vocal solo accompanied with a four minute piano ballad. With lighters in hand (which why are kids carrying lighters?), the theatre glowed in the center of the venue as Way’s singing was all that was heard from the listeners. Although My Chemical Romance’s encore set could have done without all the sappy shit, Way does have an exceptional and impressive voice. And his stage presence is carried by his vocals only.
All around, the show was different, from the crowd to the tone and it ended way too early (9:30, really?). But when the audience is a bunch of elementary and middle school kids, you can’t forget they have a curfew to meet.
