For those of you not familiar with Mudcrutch, you are not alone. Some have referred to them as simply the band before the Heartbreakers. Formed in 1970 by Heartbreakers Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench and their fellow Gainesville natives Tom Leadon (guitar and vocals) and Randall Marsh (drums), Mudcrutch was the house band at a local bar in Florida until they were signed to a label in 1974 and moved to Los Angeles seeking rock stardom.

Following a single that failed to top charts, the band dissolved when Tom Leadon moved on to other things.

Within a couple of years, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were formed and the rest as they say is history. But in the year of the reunion tour, Mudcrutch is back. Supporting a self-titled release, the band has embarked on a “world tour” according to the tour merchandise. The world tour consists of a few nights in Ventura, San Francisco and Hollywood. I was able to catch them during their six night stint at the jam-packed Troubadour in Hollywood.

In an hour and a half set that consisted of mostly bluegrassy Americana tracks from their record and a couple of covers, the band had the crowd bobbing their heads in enjoyment. Most notable was the band’s funk and soul groove on the Bob Dylan classic “Most Likely You’ll Go Your Way (I’ll Go Mine).” The band is tight like a group that has played together for more than thirty years but fresh and fun like they are newly formed. Petty, playing bass in Mudcrutch, is the obvious star of the show but steps back and lets his fellow band mates shine. The band’s live sound allows Benmont Tench to reign on his keys and work alongside Mike Campbell in harmony creating clever licks and rhythms. Interacting often with each other and obviously grateful to be playing together once again,

Mudcrutch looks like that house band once again; they’re just happy that people are listening to them in a crowded bar. If this “world tour” continues, try to check it out and take a trip to where the purity of rock n roll still exists.
