“Come on everybody; get your hands in the air! Don’t be too cool!” Tentative hands rose, fingers a hesitative half-mast. “Aw you were like, ‘I can’t wait to see you guys’ and now you won’t put your hands up?” A stronger jut toward the Underground ceiling, and The Cool Kids busted into their 30 minute set at last Thursday’s Spin Magazine Party.

I waved my hands to the hypnotic beat of “Pump up the volume” and got an appreciative glance from Antoine “Mikey Rocks” Reed, as the other half of the duo, Evan “Chuck Inglish” Ingersoll, eventually succeeds at getting everyone stupid-excited and uninhibited.
The 80s revival hip hop duo were a kaleidoscope on stage, jumping from song to song as if in a hurry to pop the champagne and let DJ Skyler Mendoza snatch back the party reins. While they were up, the Chicago/Detroit natives sampled some tracks from their underground albums, primarily publicized through myspace.com until they signed with Chocolate Industries last year. Highlights in the set were “’88”, “Black Mags”, and “Oscar the Grouch” and the nodding antics of The Cool Kids made it clear why they’re on Rolling Stone’s “Artists to watch” list. The crowd, glittering and sweating from three hours of tearing up the dance floor to the likes of Snoop Dogg, Ludacris, and Hot Action Cop, were pumped to continue after the short headliner fix.
Fueled by the delicious “cool kids cocktail”—a “better tasting Cosmo” according to the bartender—the glitter-top, trucker hat, glam suit, high-heeled, hot shorts denim-style masses started making the glitter count on the dance floor, on tables, on booths and I chipped in as well.
The Thursday night at Underground showcases local artists like The Cool Kids, Kid Sister, and Flosstradamus. You get to mingle with the artists and dance all night, though vodka tonics are $10 a pop. This is a place to get flashy and show off your style, splurge and start the weekend early by letting off some steam.
