I must confess I did not know that June is Black Music Month. Apparently back in 2002, our beloved President proclaimed it so and it has been now ever since. So to celebrate, iTunes and Apple are hosting performances throughout the month with a great roster of artists all over the country at their Apple retail stores.

Some of the cites participating this year are New York, San Francisco, Atlanta and of course our very own, Chicago. New York of course has some of the bigger names like Wyclef Jean and Talib Kweli, but that doesn’t mean Chicago has been short changed. No not at all, this year we have three different performances to help explore a nice range of artists that are out there making some of the hottest music today.

First up on June 12th, we have award-winning singer songwriter, Marvin Sapp. Sapp describes himself as a preacher who just happens to sing. Yes he sings the gospel and has actual been around since 1990s when he was with the group, Commissioned. He might not be for everyone but there’s no denying his amazing voice.

If that’s not for you, a few days later on the 25th we have a Chicago rapper by the name of Yung Berg. Yung Berg was on the Billboard charts last year with his collaboration with Ray J. The guy is getting ready to release his first full-length album. So see him in an intimate setting while you still can.

Last but not least, we have the one and the only Michelle Williams. No not the actress formerly married to the late actor Heath Ledger. I’m of course talking about the former Destiny Child singer now solo artist. The girl’s from Rockford, Illinois so it’s nice to see she hasn’t forgotten where she came from. She was even part of the original Chicago production of Oprah’s The Color Purple last year. Her third studio album is getting ready to drop in August entitled, Unexpected. So perhaps we will get a preview of some of the new tracks.

Okay, so whether you live in Chicago, New York or any of the other cities with Apple retail stores, you have some nice opportunities to experience some great free music all in honor of Black Music Month.
