Band members and fans blew kisses to the sky that overlooked Soldier Field where The Grateful Dead played their last show July 9, 1995, before Garcia’s untimely death two months later. Various types of Deadheads graced the crowd Friday evening. Teenagers made their first connection with a generation of hippies compiled of businessmen, musicians, and peacemakers.
Front man Phil Lesh is backed by the fresh-faced Jackie Greene for his 2008 Summer Jamboree tour. Dubbed “The Prince of Americana” by the New York Times, Greene has an eerie and mysterious presence on stage that resembles a young Bob Dylan. Additional talent came from Larry Campbell on guitar, John Molo on drums, and from the electronic-funk band Particle, keyboardist Steve Molitz.
The first set kicked-off with the classic Dead songs, “Jack Straw,” and “Viola Lee Blues.” While the second set brought more notable Dead songs including, “Eyes of the World,” “Franklin’s Tower,” and closing with the harmonious “Ripple.”
Phil & Friends keep the torch alive, passing along the connection of music and inspiration to new and old generations; spreading the message of peace and speaking out about the importance of being an organ donor.
Following Chicago’s show, Phil & Friends are scheduled to play the infamous Bonnaroo Music Festival and the debut of the highly anticipated Rothbury Music Festival taking place Fourth of July weekend.
