Lollapalooza Announces 2008 Schedule Print E-mail

Lollapalooza might be over a month a way, but that doesn’t mean you can’t start planning out your three days of music. If you go now to the official website, you can create your own day to day schedule but be warned, you’re going to have to make some sacrifices. With all these bands you didn’t think you could see them all did you?

August 1-3, 2008

This year we have some great headliners and apparently they thought it would be fun to pit some of the bigger names against each other. That may just be a coincidence, but there’s no question you will have some decisions to make this year. The real question isn’t which band you are going to see, but which bands you are going to miss.

Day One starts getting troublesome around 3:15 when Duffy, Louis XIV and The Kills are all playing at the same time. I would say choice Duffy if you are a fan since she doesn’t play in the states too often. However, the alternate is ditch Duffy and go see a bit of both Louis XIV and The Kills sets. Their stages are quite close to each other and is an easily doable option. After that, head over to the AT&T stage where the gypsy punk of Gogol Bordello is playing at 4:15, he’s such a riot to see live. At 5:15 you have your next dilemma, this time between Cat Power and Mates of States. Personally Cat Power is the only way to go for me, she’s such a unique talent end of story. At 6:15 do you head to The Racontuers or Bloc Party. There’s a time this might have been a problem for me but the Bloc Party has kind of lost it for me in recent years and Jack White can’t do wrong in my book. After that, take in a little bit of The Cool Kids, make your way south for a bit of CSS and then a bit of Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks. They are all starting at 7 and you have some time as you slowly make your way to the AT&T Stage for of course, Radiohead. What do I need to say about Radiohead. I saw them years ago when they played Hutchinson Field in Grant Park and it was unbelievable, can’t wait this time.

Day Two for me doesn’t get to be a big issue until around 6:30. Here’s where you have to decide whether you are going to see Broken Social Scene, Battles or Lupe Fiasco. I think this is really all about personal taste for this one. I’m going to reserve judgment and make that decision in the moment. Next up you have Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and the Toadies. They are on opposite sides of the grounds. I’m all about Sharon Jones but the fact that I want to be at the AT&T stage at 8:30 I might end up missing her. At 8:30 is one of those that will be a hard one I think for almost everyone. Wilco and Rage Against the Machine are going head to head for this time slot and are equal great live. What do I do, I love both bands? Wilco is a great Chicago band that I saw earlier this year at one of their Riviera Theater shows. However, this may be the last time I’ll ever get a chance to see Rage….decisions decisions. To be honest, even though I don’t get why Rage is still touring (are they a band again or aren’t they!?!) I’ll probably still put my money on Rage! Those fuckers can rock a stage like no one I’ve ever experienced and even though I was a fan of Audioslave, it’s nice to see the core of the band playing the type of music they were meant to play.

Day Three is again pretty easy to pick the bands during the day and early afternoon. However, by the end of the night you will be pulling out your hair and questioning if you made the right choices. At 4:15 is when it all starts for me. Do I go with Iron & Wine or a little G. Love & Special Sauce? I may save this one again for the state I am in at that moment. At 6:15 it continues, I’m sure most people will pick Gnarls Barkley but I am a old Love & Rockets fan and I only was able to watch a few songs at their Coachella show a few months ago. Plus, I suspect Gnarls will be heading to Chicago some time soon. Then again I equally suspect Love & Rockets will as well. I hate having to make these damn decisions. The National and Mark Ronson is another one of those at 7:15. I think I’ll go again with uber-producer Mark Ronson that played Coachella a few months back. Plus, Ronson is known to bring out special guest. I wouldn’t be surprised if say a Kanye made an appearance. Hell, Rhymefest did at his Coachella set. Of course last but not least are Nine Inch Nails and Kanye West. Okay NIN goes on at 8:15 and Kanye is hitting the stage at 8:30, so technically you could start with NIN’s and end with Kanye. Actually, that’s not a bad idea I might just do that strategy.

As you can see, you need the weeks ahead to put on your thinking caps and decide on your game plan for Lolla 2008. So get your tickets if you haven’t already, download the latest schedule and get ready for another great year of Lollapalooza in Chicago’s beautiful Grant Park.
