This past weekend started off Chicago’s annual Taste of Chicago. This first weekend delivered some great musical acts that had to fight against little ole Mother Nature. But never fear, we still have seven more days to get your food on and come out to see some great musical acts.
The Taste of Chicago began back in the summer of 1980 and was the idea of the then major Jane Bryne. Back then it was just a one day event held on the 4th of July on Michigan Avenue. The following year it moved to Grant Park where it has stayed ever since. The festival is known as the world’s largest food festival. Yet the food is only the half of it all. Every year locals and people from all over the world come out for the musical acts as well. In the past, artists like Moby, Santana, Steve Winwood, Elvis Costello have come out to perform at the festival.
This year is no exception with some great names to check out in between stuffing your face. This past weekend, legends like Chaka Khan and Stevie Wonder performed and delivered some of the songs you grew up listening to. If that wasn’t to your satisfaction, last night Chicago’s own Plain White T’s and Josh Kelley performed.
But that’s only the beginning; this week offers some great shows worth the downtown trek. Starting today you can get a “taste” of the best of Broadway with the casts of Jersey Boys, Wicked, Legally Blonde and A Chorus Line. On Tuesday you have the beautiful Joss Stone and the equally talented Ryan Shaw performing. They played last year’s Charter One Pavilion and were both wonderful to see. The 4th brings us 93XRT’s showcase with Gomez, Old 97’s and Alejandro Escovedo. Finally on the 5th you have another 93XRT showcase with the ageless Bonnie Raitt.
So if you haven’t made your way to Grant Park then what are you waiting for? The Taste of Chicago has a little bit of everything for everyone. Come out for the food and stay for the musical showcases.
