Everyone loves a good scary movie and with the advancement of CGI these days, scary movie are more believable and terrifying than ever before. The Ruins, based on the second novel by American author Scott Smith, is one of those films that will scare the crap out of you and make you never want to go on vacation ever again.

Starring Jonathan Tucker, Jena Malone, Shawn Ashmore, Laura Ramsey, Joe Anderson
Rated Unrated

The story is about two couple that decides on their last day on vacation before going back to college, to go explore an ancient Mayan ruin. They are told about the ruin by a new German friend whose brother is excavating the site. Upon arrival, they are surrounded by the locals who appear to be the guardian and protectors of the site. Before they know it, they are trapped in the jungle on the ruins and are quickly realizing things are not what they seem.

The Ruins is on par with the recent success of the Hostel franchise. The movie starts out more like a “Roadtrip” vibe and slowly turns into a nightmare. Hostel’s key success was the way they spent the time to develop the characters prior to the film making its horrific tragic turn. The Ruins make a similar attempt but is slightly less successful. Regardless, The Ruins is one of those movies that will creep you out and make you afraid of Mother Nature.

If you missed The Ruins when it was in the theater you can now be scared in the comfort of your very own home. The Ruins will be available this Tuesday on DVD and on Blu-ray in a special unrated edition. Along with the film, the disc has some great bonus features as well.

Whether it’s featurettes or deleted scenes, DreamWorks is doing this Blu-ray justice by including all the bonus features in HD. To start off with the bonus features, we have a great commentary track with the director and editor of the film. It’s always great to have the actors helping with the commentary but if you want the real behind the scenes it’s with the people that put the film together. This commentary really gives you an insight in the process of making this film and is worth a listen with a second viewing.

The featurettes look great in HD and all three are great to help show how the filmmakers made the effects, from the creation of the vines to the actual building of the ruins. If you are like me, you love to see the what it take to create a film like this and these featurettes are worth checking out.

Last but not least, we have deleted scenes that include the original and alternate ending of the film. We have a total of 5 deleted scenes that have an optional commentary track by the director and editor. The deleted scenes are better then usual (in particular the alternate ending scene).

The Ruins isn’t a bad movie, it’s actually quite a scary premise and delivered quite believable. If you are a fan of the Hostel and Saw movies then The Ruins are for you. But don’t get mad at me if you never want to go on vacation to Mexico after seeing this film again.
