Superhero Movie has a few Funny Moments Print E-mail

I guess with the popularity of the comic book movies these days, it was only a matter of time before they were parodied. Superhero Movie is by the same team that has brought us the Naked Gun movies and more recently, the Scary Movies. They are fun and stupid all at the same time. The movies always have a bevy of familiar faces and the obligatory appearance of actor Leslie Nielson. If you decided the film looked like a rental then never fear it has just come out on DVD.

Superhero Movie parodies everything from the X-Men, Fantastic Four and in particularly, Spiderman. Our story centers around the geeky high school student Rick Riker (Drake Bell), who acquires superhuman strength after being bitten by a genetically alternated dragonfly on a field trip. From there he uses his powers for good with often semi-funny results. Pamela Anderson, Jeffrey Tambor, Sarah Paxton and Tracy Morgan are all around for the ride.

Now available in a special extended edition on DVD, Superhero the movie has a slew of special features as well. First up is the feature commentary by the creative team behind the film. I’m always a big fan of commentary especiall if it’s by the people behind the scenes. This has everyone from the director/writer and the producers and is worth listening.

In addition we have an alternate ending and deleted scenes. The scenes are semi amusing but mostly understandable why they were cut from the final film. Sometimes deleted scenes from comedies are as hilarious as the film and sometimes they are not, these are not.

The other extras include a short feature on meeting the cast, a featurette on the art of spoofing and a theatrical trailer.

These movies cater to a certain audience and either you are a fan or not. Superhero Movie has it’s moments but they have done better in the past with the Scary Movie franchise. Still, sometimes we just want to watch something silly and mindless and this certainly fits in that category.
