AC/DC Rocks Out on Blu-Ray Director's Cut Print E-mail

Back in 1995, AC/DC were losing their popularity with poor record sales from their previous release of The Razor’s Edge. Drummer Phil Rudd was invited back behind the skins after leaving in 1983 over rumors of alcohol addiction and conflicts with rhythm guitarist, Malcolm Young. With the 1980-83 line-up back, the band went into the studio and the end results was the BallBreaker album. No Bull is a follow up to their 1991 classic concert film Live At Donnington. No Bull captures the band live at the Plaza De Torres De Las Ventas in Madrid, Spain during their BallBreaker tour in 1996. The concert film was released the same year and now for the first time, you can see the film as the director always wanted with this special The Director Cut.

Unrated

No Bull was directed by music video director David Mallet, who has worked with David Bowie, Queen, u2 and The Rolling Stones. He shot many of AC/DC’s music videos including “You Shook Me All Night Long” and “Who Made Who.” Mallet was the obvious choice to take the helm since he was also the one who directed their Live At Donnington concert film. The band was captured in July of 1996, when they played 3 nights in Madrid, in the middle of their multi-city world tour. The results are a multi-camera concert film shot in Super 16mm film.

The film has recently been re-mastered with a brand new hi-def film transfer and re-edited for its blu-ray release. The film because it was filmed in Super 16mm, shows a bit of its age and is a little grainy at times. Still, the film has never looked better and its new edit seems to be tighter and flow better than previous editions. Rumors have it that director Mallet was rushed in the release date and was never happy with the end results.

Along with the new director’s cut the blu-ray edition comes with a few bonus features as well. First up are 2 rare performances from the BallBreaker tour. “Cover You in Oil” from Goteborg, Sweden and “Down Payment Blues” from Dayton, Florida. Both appear to have been shot in video and pale in quality compared to the feature in both audio and visual. Still, it’s nice to see some footage from other performances and I would have liked to have even more then just the 2 of them. Note, “Cover You in Oil” shows some of the footage shot maybe for the video of sexy girls being, well covered in oil, and may be worth watching just for these scenes.

The only other bonus feature is an option to watch 4 songs in what is referred to as the Angus Cam. This is supposed to be a special feature that allows us to watch these songs in multi-angles. I tried to make this feature wok but I’m not convinced it ever showed an additional angle. You try it and let me know how you fare.

If there was any question, AC/DC has proved that even in 2008 they can still sell albums and concert tickets. Black Ice their 15th studio album came out last month and is a long time coming to the follow up to 2000’s Stiff Upper Lip. Black Ice has since gone to number one in 29 different countries and the band is currently on an 18 month world tour. While you wait for the band to come to you city, No Bull: The Directors Cut is out on blu-ray and is worth checking out.
