Visions of 80’s pop star George Michael singing in your living room, a bi-plane chasing you down the streets of San Francisco, a fire breathing dragon hiding in your closet? These are just a few of the visions young up and comer Eli Stone has to deal with on a daily basis. Eli is a thirty-something attorney on the rise in his firm who has everything from a hot car, a dream apartment and a beautiful sexy fiancée. Yet there’s one problem, these hallucinations of Eli’s are coming on from a recently discovered inoperable brain aneurysm. As the visions become more and more real, Eli desperately tries to go on with his life as usual while keeping his recently medical issue a secret. Is Eli losing his mind or could he be the next messiah? So goes the premise of the first season of this quirky ABC dramedy now available on DVD.

Eli Stone is not your typical court room drama and its uniqueness and warmth is the key that draws you in. This is a show that will surprise you; all the while making you smile and may even tug at your heart strings. All 13 episodes are included now on a 4-DVD set with a slew of bonus features.

All the extras are available on disc 4, which is perfect if you have already seen the season when it was broadcasted and just want to rent it for the extras. First up we have the extended pilot that includes additional scenes of Eli with his fiancée. This is also found on disc 4, and includes an optional commentary track from the cast and crew. I’m a big fan of the commentary track and although I would have liked it on all 13 episodes, I’ll take the extended version of the pilot.

There are 4 featurettes on the show. Turning A Prophet: The Creation of Eli Stone is an over 10 minute featurette on the making of the series including behind the scenes footage. Creating the Visions: The Effects of Eli Stone gives an inside look on how they create the seamless blend of the CGI effects. There is one more featurette entitled Inside The Firm: The Natasha Henstridge Tour, a 5 minute tour of the set with Natasha Henstridge. Acting On Faith: Eli and George Michaels is a look at the usual connection of George Michael to the series including every episode being named after one of his songs. All of these featurettes are well written and help to give a little more insight into the series.

If that isn’t enough, there are 8 minutes worth of deleted scenes and Eli Oops! a collection of fun bloopers from season one. These are always fun and it’s nice to see these days they are taking the time to include these in TV series collections these days.

Eli Stone is one of those shows that constantly surprises you. The minute you think you have it all figured out they throw a curve ball. There are not many shows or even movies today that one can say something like that. This is the genius and the fun that is Eli Stone. It is well acted, well written and is a series that allows you to figure out the visions with our lead character. So do yourself a favor and pick up the first season on DVD. Do it soon so you’re ready when season two starts, and if I can read my visions correctly, October 14th on ABC.
