Death Magnetic: An Anticipated Ressurection Print E-mail

The newly released Metallica: Death Magnetic makes me believe they still got what it takes. After several sub par albums and may I say a downright disappointing St Anger- Death Magnetic delivers what all Metallica fans have been craving; what we knew was possible- a reemergence of the well constructed, thrashing sound, uniquely their own. The sound that is Metallica!

Death Magnetic diverges from the 8 previous albums released, produced by Rick Rubin. Trading Bob Rock for Rick Rubin has gotten much scrutiny accusing Rubin of making it pop and radio ready which we all know Metallica is clearly not. I hear no pop in Death Magnetic. Being it Rubin or not- It was the change they needed, resurfacing with a passionately cultivated sound that is innovative and true to their roots. One of the main reasons I enjoyed Death Magnetic so much is because it is reminiscent of their much loved, heavy, thrashing earlier stuff with killer guitar riffs and an intense Ulrich at the drums.

Track 4, “The Day That Never Comes,” and the first released single off the album, reminds me of something off the Black Album as track 2: “The End of the Line” - cautions of the “The Four Horseman” off of Kill Em All- in its structure. Track 7 and one of my favorites- “The Unforgivin III” has a delicate, melodic start, and it breaks into classic Metallica sound slow and dark with a heavy ending- this song builds you up and lets you down, telling the story then creeping into a classic guitar solo. Widely debated, this is my favorite of the three “Unforgivens” and is up there as one of my favorite tracks on the CD. A couple others you may want to consider checking out are tracks “Cyanide,” and “Suicide” and “Redemption”. These are equally worthy listenings and are some of my favorites from the album. The ending track, “My Apocalypse”- the track itself I could take it or leave it, nevertheless it’s a solid finale to the album.

Although having caught some slack for its sound quality and radio readiness I think it is their best album since the Black Album. It is also the first album where all of the band members had a part in the collaboration of each song. It shows. Probably a sure bet that Metallica can’t please the fans and critics as they did back in the day, but the power and essence of Metallica has been resurrected.- Though not a Kill Em All or Master of Puppets, Death Magnetic proves that Metallica is back at the top of their game in 2008. They kick off their US and Canadian tour October 21st in Glendale, AZ and arrive in Chicago on Jan 26, a show I won’t be missing!
