Guru Pitka (Mike Myers) is the world’s second best self-help guru. Although successful in his own right, he is constantly being shadowed by the world renowned and real life number one self-help guru, Deepak Chopra. When the Toronto Maple Leaf’s star hockey player Darren Roanoke (Romany Malco) can not perform on the ice, owner Jane Bullard (Jessica Alba) hires Guru Pitka to work his spiritual powers. If Guru Pitka can help the hockey player he will not only earn the two million price tag he is promised, but also a spot on the Oprah show, that will win him the recognition he needs over Deepak Chopra.
The Love Guru came out over this past summer and was not the return to the big screen that Mike Myers and the studio’s hoped. A critical and box office disappointment, The Love Guru stood up against Steve Carell ‘s movie adaptation of the TV show Get Smart and lost. Yet, now available on DVD and Blu-ray home video editions, The Love Guru might get a second chance at healing its wounds it took over the summer. Along with the feature film, some nice bonus features are include as well.
One of the many ways studios have been getting consumers to buy DVD’s these days, is to offer a digital copy of the film for their iPod or Mp3 players. It’s a nice bonus, especially when they are comedies that you can watch again and again.
In addition, studios are now including all of the bonus features in HD. Everything from the deleted & extended scenes, bloopers, outtakes, the trailer and the featurettes. This may be a small thing but if it’s not in HD it really shows on your blu-ray player.
The Love Guru may not be Austin Powers, yet don’t believe what the critics said, this film is still chocked full of plenty of hysterical moments to keep you laughing over and over. Some of these you might miss viewing the first time around.
The voice-over machine that has 3 voice settings: man, woman and Morgan Freeman is classic. The Bollywood performances of songs Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5,” Steve Miller’s “The Joker” and Extreme’s “More than Words” is right on the money and continues Myers’ tradition of song and dance numbers in his films. The line – “What is it you can’t face?” is so wrong and one of the funniest lines ever! Stephen Colbert as the drug and sex addict hockey broadcaster is pure comedy genius. The fist pound handshake is something I’m sure I’ll start initiating (when you see the film this will make sense). The outtake with Kanye West and Mike Meyers playing his self is a great parody of that uncomfortable moment Myers had with Kanye a few years back during the Katrina TV benefit show - too bad it ended up on the cutting room floor.
I must also note that it is not just Mike Myers that shines in the movie, but all of the performers here as well. From Verne Troyer (who is way under used) as the coach and who finally has a proper speaking role in a Mike Myers film. The always loveable and sexy Jessica Alba, who I’ll watch in anything she does. Romany Malco as the hockey player, who seems to be in almost every comedy these days (40 Year Old Virgin, Blades of Glory). Of course (I hate to admit) Justin Timberlake’s performance as the well endowed Jacques "Le Coq" Grandé is perfect and the perfect rivial. I think Timberlake is overrated in general, yet there's no denying his flair for the funny (SNL's "Dick in the Box").
The Love Guru didn’t deserve the harash criticism it received when it hit the theaters earlier this year. Mike Myers proves he can still make us laugh without relying on his solid hits like Shrek and Austin Powers. The Love Guru I predict will get second life on home video and receive the love and audience it deserves. So do your self a favor and make an appointment with the Love Guru.
