Through the years there have been many versions available of The Godfather saga. Some good and some bad, but never exactly right. These versions included crappy VHS copies, to the weird decision of putting the films in chronological order. Now finally after all these years, justice has finally been served to The Godfather films as they have been painstakingly restored and remastered. They are now available for the first time looking and sounding better than ever for the first time to the small screen on beautiful blu-ray.
The original Godfather film is ranked as the second greatest film in American cinema, right behind Orson Welle’s Citizen Kane from the American Film Institute. It won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Screenplay. The Godfather II, who many consider one of the best sequels ever made and maybe a stronger film than the original, won six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Supporting Award. The Godfather Part III was nominated for seven Academy Awards but walked away that year without a single Oscar.
Now available for the first time in hi-def, we can finally see the films the way they were meant to be seen. Along with all three films, we have a fourth disc filled with a wealth of supplementary material to help you explore the phenomena that is The Godfather trilogy.
One thing that often happens and is really frustrating when there are multiple editions of films available, are all of them have different extras. Instead of including the previous extras they only include the new ones. This means you have to obtain both editions, or decide which of the extras are more important to you. This happened recently with the new releases of the Indiana Jones films this past summer. It’s frustrating and the consumer is getting scammed and cheated. Not here though, along with the new bonus features that are in HD, we also have the bonus features that were created and included in the 2001 edition as well.
The extras here are amazing to say the least, especially for a trilogy that began in the early ‘70s. These extras include screen tests for the first Godfather film and so many documentaries it will take you hours to watch all of them. Coppola enjoys the whole process of film making and it shows in the archiving and capturing of the process. Everything is here from pre-production to walking the red carpet at the day of the premiere.
Frances Ford Coppola is one of those directors that lives and breathes film and it shows. Coppola has through the years often gone back and reexamined his films. Back in 2001, Apocalypse Now was re-released as Apocalypse Now Redux, restoring footage previous left out of the original cut. Fortunately this time around Coppola has not added any new footage and instead only made the originals look and sound the best they can be.
The Godfather trilogy tells the tale of the Italian-American Corleone crime family. It is a story that spans ten years and is a great accomplishment in American cinema. Francis Coppola has given us a great gift by finally offering them in hi-def. If you are a fan of The Godfather then the only way for you to see them is to pick them up on blu-ray.
