Transformers Finally Arrives on Blu-ray Print E-mail

The job of a critic, from my perspective, is to review a movie for what it is and not for it is not. I’ve been attacked for praising Michael Bay’s Transformers movie in the past, but I am even more willing to stick to my guns now with the release of the film on beautiful blu-ray. Yes, Transformers is a film based on a children’s toy franchise from the ‘80s. Although an unlikely idea for a film, the movie works well as a fun action film, not unlike what Disney did with their Pirates of the Caribbean franchise based on a ride. Transformers was originally not released on blu-ray because it was distributed from one of the studios that was exclusively using the HD format. Yet now that the format wars are over, Transformers finally arrives on a two disc special edition blu-ray.

Written by Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and John Rogers
Starring Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Rachael Taylor, Anthony Anderson, Jon Voight and John Turturro
Rated PG-13

Director Michael Bay was and is still a huge support of blu-ray. Bay was very boisterous at the time about his dissatisfaction for the film not being offered originally on blu-ray, in its October of 2007 home release. Bay was so adamant, he was quoted as saying, Paramount Studios would never get the sequel from him since they had gone exclusively to HD.

Bay must have been tickled pink when the announcement that blu-ray had won and must have been counting the days until its release on blu-ray. That wait is over and the film is all the better for it. In fact, I have read that Rob Moore, Vice Chairman of Paramount Pictures, has recently said because of the expanded capacity of blu-ray, the film looks even better now because of the higher bit-rate Along with the film, all of the bonus features are showcased here in beautiful HD quality.

All of the previous bonus material is included here in the blu-ray edition. There is a commentary track by Michael Bay, documentaries, story boards and trailers. There are also a few new features as well. If you have a Profile 2.0 player there is BD-Live that provides more on-line content. Transformers Heads Up Display (H.U.D.) is a picture-in-picture feature that allows the viewer to watch pop-up trivia and the making of the scenes that you are watching.

So if you are a fan of the Transformers, Michael Bay movies, or action films, then this is the perfect film for you. If you are more of an art film lover, then skip it. Transformers isn’t for everyone but that doesn’t mean it’s not a fun enjoyable film. Now on blu-ray, it looks and sounds better than ever and is a perfect edition to your growing blu-ray library.
