Indiana Jones is Back - Older But Still Entertaining Print E-mail

It’s hard not to crack a smile when you hear the Indiana Jones March. After all these years, Indiana Jones 4 finally saw the light of day and fans cheered and critics jeered. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out this past summer to mixed reviews. Not too surprising, the pressure was steep after the quality of the first three films. Plus, it has been almost twenty years since the last film hit the theaters and that one had Sean Connery in it. How did they stand a chance? Well, they had one key ingredient, Harrison Ford. Harrison Ford proved he can transcend time and can still kick some serious ass.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull opens in 1957 and the enemy is no longer the Nazis, it’s the Russians. Just incase we have any question what year it is, there are several references to the times from the hotrods and ‘50s soda pop joints, to even a nuclear test sequence. It’s no longer WWII it’s the era of the Iron Curtain.

Watching the film now for the second and third time, I’m not as put off by some of the silliness that appears in the film. I’m not necessarily justifying it, I’m just saying maybe it’s not as bad as my initial feelings were watching it the first time around. One expects a lot from an Indiana Jones film and when gophers keep making an appearance, you start to get nervous. Watching it now, I still find it silly but I get the overall fun. These gags are geared for the younger viewer and I suspect I would have loved it back at the my age when the first films came out. Regardless, perhaps give these moments another chance now that you are prepared for them.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull now arrives on DVD and more importantly the first of the series to be available on blu-ray. Along with the film all of the bonus materials are offered here in beautiful HD. We have a ton of documentaries and featurettes on the whole process of getting the latest installment to the big screen. The only thing missing, as with all Spielberg films, are deleted scenes and an informative commentary track. Spielberg never seems interested in offering these bonus features and it’s too bad, I would love to see the other storylines they persued, maybe even filmed, but in the end decided to drop.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull reminds of how much fun these Indiana Jones series are to watch. It’s too bad we had to wait almost two decades for this one. Harrison Ford even at the age of 66 is still one of the best action heroes alive. Let’s hope now that the hat still fits, they make one more before they continue the series without him.
