Yet Dirty Sexy Money is more than a modern day Dynasty melodrama, it’s about seeking truth and redemption. The heart of the show is of an idealistic lawyer named Nick George (Peter Krause). Nick George grew up in the shadows of the Darling family with his father working as their personal lawyer and all around go-to fix-it guy. After Nick’s father dies in a suspicious plane crash. Nick accepts the baton as the Darling family lawyer position to help do good in the world and hunt down his father’s killer. Dirty Sexy Money is a fun filled look into a Paris Hilton like world of what kind of family is created by wealth.
Dirty Sexy Money works because of the well written and acted cast of crazy characters. Donald Sutherland proves he can still sink his teeth into a role as head of the Darling clan, playing Tripp Darling. Jill Clayburgh as the socialite and cheating matriarch Letitia Darling can equally deliver a complex character. However, the parents are just the tip of the iceberg and don’t even hold a candle to their collection of complex children.
Karen Darling (Natalie Zea) the eldest daughter who, even as she gets ready to marry guy number two, is not too shy about admitting her feelings for her one true love, their lawyer and childhood friend, Nick George. Jeremy Darling (Seth Gabel) the youngest and one of the twins is the partier who is trying to find his place out of the insanity and perhaps even grow up. Juliet Darling (Samaire Armstrong) the spoiled brat Paris Hiltoness second half of the twins, whose sluttish persona may be little more than an act, but her lack of brains is not. Brian Darling Sr. (Glenn Fitzgerald) the married “man of God” with twins and an illegitimate son to boot, is the angry one of the bunch and ironically the one that needs spiritual guidance the most. Finally but not least, we have the handsome Patrick Darling (William Baldwin) who appears to be the one Darling that has it all. Patrick is a rising politician, has a perfect wife, two beautiful children and of course an affair with a transsexual. This is the Darling family.
Dirty Sexy Money is one of those shows that come around once in a while to television to shake all the rules up and create an original show. The Darling family is the craziest concocted family since the Bluth family on Arrested Development. If you missed the first season never fear it is now available in it’s entirety on DVD along with some great bonus material.
The bonus material has everything from a commentary track on three episodes, deleted scenes, a blooper reel, featurettes that include a VIP set tour to the making of the show. All are a great addition to a great promising show.
The first season of Dirty Sexy Money only produced 10 of the proposed 22 episodes because of the writer’s strike. Dirty Sexy Money’s second season has already begun so you have your work cut out for you. Set your tivo to tape the current season, watch season one on DVD and then catch up with this season on ABC.go.com.
