I’ve always been a fan of Weezer in the sense that I like their hits and have purchased their records but not to the extent that I know their b-sides, bootlegs or have seen them live. Needless to say, I was excited to see them on their current “Hootenany” Tour 2008. I wasn’t sure what to expect and didn’t have very high expectations. Rivers and gang were good and their singles still sound great but there was something missing, energy.

Rivers probably sang no more than half of the songs instead leaving them to bass player Scott Shriner and drummer Patrick Wilson. The songs sounded eerily similar to the versions that I remembered with Rivers on the microphone but Rivers is Weezer and Weezer is Rivers. Without him singing, it’s just not the same. The band performed hit after hit and even mixed in some songs off of the new “Red Album.” You have to give it to them, they do create hits. When I first heard “Pork and Beans,” I thought it was a pretty forgettable song but after seeing it performed live and watching the crowd feed off of the chorus, it’s a legitimate classic. In the encore, Weezer brought up a bunch of contest winners who joined them on instruments such as accordions and electric cellos. It made for some great moments musically.
Similar to the Foo Fighters or Green Day, Weezer has been able to stick around for over a decade releasing new records with top 10 singles. They haven’t lost their sense of humor and they don’t appear to take themselves too seriously. But something about watching Rivers walking around that stage in a track outfit made me think that Weezer is no longer young. He’s aged, they’ve aged and I’ve aged. The music is still great but doesn’t have the same effect, it’s dated. They are still relevant but it’s beginning to feel forced. Rivers Cuomo is no longer that bright-faced young lad from the “Buddy Holly” video, he’s a dad. So what does it all mean? Nothing…
Go see Weezer and sing along like you did when you had a walkman and the Los Angeles Forum was still home to the mighty Lakers. Enjoy it for what it is and don’t try to analyze it. Unfortunately, I wasn’t given that option.
