Do you hear that? There’s something buzzing around in Hollywood. No, it’s not some cliché celebutant acting out or the paparazzi stalking Brit Brit, it’s a new wave in music. It’s normally categorized as singer-songwriter rock and roll. But it’s something different that hasn’t been seen around these parts in a very long time. These musicians work together as a family; one big extended family that protects itself from all that wants to stop it from succeeding.

If Hollywood was the setting for this movie, venues/bars like the Hotel Café and Cranes Tavern would be the back lots. On any given night, musicians play fresh grooves, spirited lyrics and soulful sets as they manicure themselves for the summer blockbuster in their futures. Am I beating this to death? The fact is, if you haven’t played the hotel or Cranes, you haven’t played. These are the new Viper Rooms, Troubadours, Roxy’s and Key Clubs. This is the new home for music’s finest.

Andy Clockwise might not be a household name where you live, but for me, he might as well be Bruce Springsteen. I’ve seen many incarnations of the Andy Band, as we call it, but his newest, tightest and most mature version is the finest. Andy is hard to describe. He’s a singer-songwriter from Australia with the musical ear and skill of Jeff Lynne and the heart and soul of the Boss himself. He’s a soft-spoken intellectual that puts everything he has into his music and his performance. The audience gets it, feels it and always responds.

There is nothing manufactured about Andy. You never ask yourself if you buy it because there’s nothing to buy; he’s not selling. He’s giving himself to the audience and the rest of his band mates. Local “hired-gun” and guitar maven Joshua Norton backs him well on the bass and keys while also serving as the glue that holds the many pieces together. Norton is also a familiar face at The Hotel Café, performing with many other groups as well as solo shows.

Andy and friends were promoting his newest album tentatively called “The Socialite,” which is packed with instant classics like ”My Generation” and “Everybody’s In a Band.” Goodies from “Classic FM,” his first major release shined brightly too. But the new songs seemed to really get the crowd jumping.

A word to the wise: if Andy Clockwise and his band of legends come to your town, you’d better be there. You’ll want to be one of the people saying, “I remember when” one day. And if you’re in Hollywood and looking for a place to catch what’s new in music, go and see Darren Crane at Crane’s Tavern or Tim Jones at the Hotel Café. They’ll treat you mighty fine.
