Disney has always shined when it comes to animation. They were a part of the golden era of animation and it’s hard not to think of the two as one. Sleeping Beauty is the classic tale of good and evil and has everything one would ever want from a fairy tale. With the 50th anniversary, Sleeping Beauty (Two-Disc Platinum Edition) is the first of Disney’s classic animation to arrive on blu-ray with more to come next year. Sleeping Beauty (Two-Disc Platinum Edition) looks brilliant and one will never be able to view it any other way again.

In the 14th century, beautiful Princess Aurora is born to King Stefan and Queen Leah. On the joyful day of christening the little Princess, the kingdom gathers in celebration, that includes the three good fairies. Good fairy Flora give her the gift of beauty, Fauna give her the gift of song. However, before Merryweather can grant her gift, the evil villainess Maleficent arrives uninvited to put a curse on the innocent little infant. Before the sunset of Princess Aurora’s sixteenth birthday, she will prick her finger on a spindle’s spinning wheel and die. Fortunately, Merryweather still had her wish and uses it to alter the curse. Aurora will not die but will instead fall into a deep sleep until she is awakened by true love’s kiss.

So begins this classic fairy tale that has been enjoyed for generations. Now you can see more of it, literally, in fact this is the first time the film is seen in it’s full negative aspect ration of 2:55:1. Even when it was originally released in 1959, the Super Technirama 70 prints were only 2.20:1 and the CinemaScope prints showed at 2:35:1. With that in mind, one can see why Sleeping Beauty was chosen as their very first blu-ray release from their classic period.

With the recent restoration to mark the 50th anniversary of the film, Walt Disney Studio’s has made an excellent choice with Sleeping Beauty. The animation is vibrant and looks and sounds unbelievably amazing. Sleeping Beauty was an end of a era for the Disney Studios, this was the last of their animated films to use hand-inked cells and to be personally supervised by Walt Disney himself.

This being a Disney Platinum Edition, this two-disc set or really three-disc set, is jammed packed full of extras that will keep you busy for hours and hours. It has everything from a audio and a picture-in-picture commentary track, a slew of featurettes, a virtual walkthrough tour of the original Disneyland park attraction of the Sleeping Beauty Castle and special BD Live content as well.

If that’s not enough, the third disc is a standard DVD version of the film incase maybe you want to watch it on your laptop. Disney has truly included everything they could to make this truly a magical edition.

Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty nearly bankrupted the studio when it was originally released. Yet through the years, the film has gained a following and is now considered a crown jewel in animation. Sleeping Beauty has it all and now everyone can see it in all it’s vibrant beauty on blu-ray.
