Sabrina is a Hollywood classic with three of Hollywood’s biggest stars of the golden era. I’m of course referring to the original staring Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn and William Holden and not the so so 1995 remake. To be fair it’s hard to compete when a film is so perfect the first time around. The 1954 Sabrina, directed by the equally legendary director Billy Wilder, is original and a classic in every way.

Sabrina is a story about a chauffeur’s daughter who grows up yearning for the one person she can not obtain, David Larrabee, one of the wealthy sons of the family her father works for and where they both reside. Sabrina is sent off to Paris to both escape her infatuation and perhaps grow up as she goes to learn cooking and in turn life. Back from Paris after two years, Sabrina arrives as a stunning sophisticated woman turning everyone’s head including the one head she has always yearned. But the timing is bad; David Larrabee is set to marry for the fourth time that is both for love and a crucial business proposition for the Larrabee business. Now it is up to the other brother, Linus Larrabee to take matters into his own hands and stop the romance before it ruins everything. However, in the process Linus just might find the most impractical thing he has avoided his whole life, love.
So goes this perfect tale that has showcases these perfect talents. Hepburn is perfect and adorable in every way as the innocent young lady that just wants to find true love. Bogart proves he can be more than just a heavy and is engaging as the stodgy businessman that slowly reveals a heart. Holden proves he can hold his own as the reckless yet likeable playboy that slowly grows up.
Is it sappy? Of course it is, but how wonderful and perfect is this story about waking up and falling in love with the very thing that is right in front of your face. If you’ve never seen the film you are in lucky, Paramount has just recently re-released it as part of its two-disc Centennial Collection. Along with the feature the second disc has a wonderful smorgasbord of extras to keep you busy for hours. Everything from featurettes on the film to one’s just focusing on Audrey Hepburn and William Holden (although strangely not one on Bogart).
It’s nice to see Paramount has finally gone to the trouble of re-releasing this film in a superb package. However, it’s a shame they didn’t include a blu-ray version as well. Regardless, Sabrina is one of those films that stand the test of time. The actors are perfect, the filming is superb and story is classic. Do yourself a favor and fall in love with Sabrina.
