If you don’t know about the 11-time Emmy-nominated Bravo series called Inside the Actors Studio, then you’re missing out. Hosted by the creator of the series and Dean Emeritus of the Actors Studio Drama School, James Lipton knows his subjects well and knows how to help bring out the human side during his interviews. With more than 14 years and over 200 interviews later, some of these wonderful interviews are finally being available on DVD.

Robin Williams seems to give Lipton a run for his money, who allows (perhaps with no choice) to go in and out of characters as he revealed little pieces of himself. Robin Williams is one of those amazing people that you never know what is going to come out of his mouth. The interview turned into a 5 hour plus evening of crazy antics that at times seemed to be a one-act performance piece. Lipton in his introduction to ghe DVD talks about how hard it was to edit it down for the show. Yet even in this edit and within Robin’s crazy rants, Lipton is able to pull out some wonderful intimate and revealing moments.
Through the course of the program you can clearly see Robin is having a blast along with everyone around him. Robin talks about his parents, himself being a father, to his experience on many of his most loved films. He talks about working his some of the great directors and how their trust gave him the confidence to delivers those characters. How Disney’s Aladdin allowed him to be more himself as a stand-up comedian on film although he sometimes went too blue. At one point he grabs a shawl from a person in the audience and proceeds to become a series of characters working with only a shawl. This is the beauty and the enjoyment of Inside the Actors Studio.
If this isn’t enough we are given a few of the outtakes in the bonus material entitled - Great Moments That Didn’t Make The Cut. We aren’t given the whole 3 plus hours that are hiding some where in the vaults, but we are given several minutes of perfect moments that easily could have been included on the original program. I suspect many of his interviews could easily have become 2/3 more parts to do the interviews justice.
If you don’t have cable then never fear. Inside the Actors Studio is now available on DVD. James Lipton is a character in his own right, yet is also great in what he does. Inside the Actors Studio is a gift that they actually have taped these interviews through the years. This segment with Robin Williams from 2001 is at times exhausting, but always fascinating.
