In May of 2007, it was revealed that Lost would conclude at the end of the 2009–2010 television season. With that in mind, the producers told the viewers they clearly had an “end game” in mind. Season 4 clearly showed this as the show appeared to be more focused compared to the previous seasons (such as the Nikki and Paulo episode in season 3).
Still the 2007-2008 television season was a tough one, even for those shows that were indestructible. Lost was only 8 episodes into filming when the writer’s strike began and threatened to cause more havoc then the island dwellers known as “the others”. With a season that was originally planned with sixteen episodes, the producers were able to get approval of a 3-hour finale and season 4 survived in tact with 14 episodes.
There are certain shows that really shine in HD television. Lost shot almost entirely in the exotic location of Oahu, Hawaii looks incredible and is the only way to watch it. Lost: The Complete Fourth Season (The Expanded Experience) is coming your way on standard DVD and blu-ray with all 14 episodes and a whole disc full of bonus material to keep you literally busy for hours.
On disc 5 you are given a wealth of bonus material to satisfy your Lost fix. We start with Lost on Location, an 8 chapter feature that gives us over 40 minutes of behinds the scene in the making Lost. The Island Backlot: Lost in Hawaii continues our backstory tour showing us how they transform Oahu into every place from a desert, Korea and even the middle east. Offshore Shoot completes our tour and focuses on the shooting portion on the freighter.
The Right to Bear Arms is a feature on script coordinator Gregg Nations. In particular, Gregg’s responsibilities to keep track on all of the guns that are featured in the show each week. It’s amusing to see the history of the Marshal’s gun in particular.
Soundtrack of Survival: This is on the first ever performance of the score of Michael Giacchino’s score of the series by the Honolulu Symphony Pops. In many ways this is a documentary on the composer himself but it also shows you the process of putting on this concert.
There are also a series of unreleased footage in three different unique categories. There ae deleted scenes, bloopers and the Lost” Missing Pieces (Mobisodes that wee originally only available to watch on your cell phone).
Course of the Future: The Definitive, Interactive Flash Forwards feature allows you to figure out the order of these flash forwards in their correct sequence. Once completed you are allowed to witness them in one long version that equals roughly an hour. It may surprise you what came event came first. It’s also a great way to refresh and inform you about the show and prepare you for season 5.
The Freighter Folk feature introduces us to the our new characters from season 4 whereas The Oceanic Six: A Conspiracy of Lies is a tabloid like parody feature that pokes fun at the storyline.
So just because you’ve seen season 4 doesn’t mean you’ve seen it all. Lost: The Complete Fourth Season (The Expanded Experience) is everything it promises and more. Make sure to also check out the little booklet entitled For Your Safety in the case. It has fun poking fun at the safety booklets that are in the pocket of airline seats and the show it’s self.
