Geographer Delivers From Start to Finish Print E-mail

All too often, negative connotations are associated with the mere mention of “mood music.” However, there’s nothing negative to be said about Geographer’s debut album Innocent Ghosts, with its ability to set an airy, entrancing and extremely pleasant mood. Vocalist Mike Deni, who set up shop in the Bay Area after heading out west from his native New Jersey, displays his ethereal voice to perfection on the album, leaving little doubt as to why Geographer have become budding stars in the San Francisco indie music scene. Deni’s voice, soothing and versatile, might remind some rock audiences of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke on muscle relaxers.

Opening track “Can’t You Wait” features an emotionally building guitar riff that sends shockwaves through listener’s ears right off the bat. Carnival-esque sounds created by cellist and electronic background noise specialist Nathan Blaz give the track the mesmerizing “ghost-like” tone that becomes a common thread throughout the appropriately titled album.

While the aura created by Geographer’s sound is a definitive aspect of their debut album, Deni’s voice is what will stick with listeners. The peaceful yet chilling sound that escapes from his vocal chords is striking. The thoughts, reflected in the lyrical content, point at not only Deni’s songwriting ability, but more importantly his maturity and development as the band’s driving force.

It’s evident upon closer listen that Deni struggles throughout the album with common questions echoed by larger humanity. Existence. Religion. Hope. Love. Deni’s lyrics come across in a way that flows, a vision of a brighter, yet still uncertain future. “The stain will not come, I try to live it down, not even God will last forever, well I hope so” Deni resonates on “Rushing In Rushing Out,” a lyrically-infused rock ballad.

Another particularly satisfying aspect of “Innocent Ghosts” is the band’s decision to feature female vocal accompaniment courtesy of Kacey Johansing, who shines on tracks such as “Caught a Fire,” “Underneath My Heart” and “The Morning.” Johansing superbly compliments Deni on “Wonderful,” a love song that truly allows both singers’ voices to blend in a “wonderful” way.

Geographer’s best overall sound on their album is displayed in the musical landscape of sorts entitled “Each Other’s Ghost.” Drummer Brian Ostreicher lays down a driving beat that only increases as Blaz interplays with his electronica-natured soundscape. Of course, Deni does his part with a strong and passionate vocal showing, particularly at the song’s conclusion.

“Innocent Ghosts” points at the budding of a wonderful musical partnership. Geographer gives listeners a celestial experience from start to finish. On the lovely track “Asleep” Deni soulfully admits, “I’ve been asleep til now.” If Deni has been asleep while recording “Innocent Ghosts,” the rock world should only be so lucky for him to awake.

The Innocent Ghosts album has been available to download since August 17th. If you haven’t experienced Geographer yet then what are you waiting for? Their fan base is growing day by day, SPIN has recently listed them as one of the “Three Undiscovered Bands You Need to Hear Now!” and everyone is already three months ahead of you.
