The Puma brand is looking pretty young for its age. Last night Puma celebrated the company’s 60th anniversary with a free blowout show at The Metro in Wrigleyville. For an old company Puma knows how to throw a party.

Despite starting later then originally planned, the night went off without a hitch. The Metro was filled to capacity with a mostly younger crowd, many probably coming fresh off of finals.
The night kicked off with the always beautiful DJ duo Rocktapussy. The musical team is made up of DJ Mother Hubbard and DJ A-Cup; two pint sized badass girls who know their way around a turntable. As the crowd poured in the duo increased the intensity with each new track they spun. True to their name, A-Cup revved up the audience with the statement “Alright! You guys having fun?! The next 10 songs are all going to be about pussy!” Riotous cheers ensued.
It is hard to explain the chemistry of a live DJ concert, much less two of them on stage at the same time. Though the girls spun mostly ambiance music the wide range of samples that Rocktapussy played and re-mixed showed the talent and love of music that the girls share.
Watching Rocktapussy work is like listening to really good jazz. The two DJ’s are so intertwined with each other that they fill in each other’s gaps. The result is a harmonious fusion of styles and genres amplified by the duo’s rockstar personalities.
By 11:30 p.m. the crowd had gotten restless. Rocktapussy had quickly and quietly dismantled their turntables and had exited the stage. It was already late by Wednesday night standards. Then, within seconds, the entire venue exploded in screams of joy as The Bravery took the stage.
Wasting no time the band dived into their hour-long set. It was a clean, polished show from a band that is clearly underrated. Puma made the right choice in grabbing The Bravery to play their show. Not only are they all expert musicians but they are also currently not touring. Those lucky enough to see them Wednesday night were treated to a one of a kind show.
It should be noted, though the entire band played well, the stand out was lead guitarist Michael Zakari. Like a practiced master Zakarin aimed to melt faces Wednesday night, and melt they did. Zakarin’s guitar solos were breathtaking and he moved on stage like a young Pete Townshend. It was hard not to fall in love with the music.
The party continued well into the night and early morning. Rocktapussy took the stage once again spinning their electro-pop to the always appreciative audience. Puma was the perfect host for such an event and making it free was an added perk. Let’s hope the company is around in another 60 years so we can all do it again.
