Samberg's Hot Rod Isn't For Everyone Print E-mail

Saturday Night Live has lasted over three decades on the small screen for a reason, producer Lorne Michaels knows funny and has proved it time and time again. Adam Samberg may not be a household name but I bet you know some of skits he has starred in. In particular the Digital Shorts “Lazy Sunday” starring Samberg and Chris Purnell rapping about their quest to see The Chronicles of Narnia film and “Dick in the Box,” a duet with Justin Timberlake singing to their special lady. Last year Adam Samberg broke out to the big screen as a stuntman wannabe in the movie Hot Rod.

Hot Rod was originally conceived as project for Will Ferrell as the lead and was eventually rewritten and dumb downed or “Samberged” as it is described in the making of documentary. Samberg’s adolescent humor isn’t for everyone and showed at the box office and reviews by the critics. Hot Rod is a story about Rod Kimble (Adam Samberg) and his faithful crew of neighborhood misfits. Rod still lives at home and isn’t ready to give up on his dreams of becoming the next Evel Knievel. One problem, he’s the worst stuntman in the world. When his stepfather becomes ill, Rod and his crew start on a quest to raise enough funds to get his stepfather a heart, so he can get well enough for Rod to finally "beat his face in" and finally achieve his respect.

Hot Rod arrives on blu-ray with a nice collection of bonus material. The film comes with a commentary with director Akiva Schaffer and actors Adam Samberg and Jorma Taccone. The commentary is full of little insights in the making of the film. A making of documentary, an unnecessary pointless documentary on the making of the score and a collection of deleted scenes and outtakes are just a few of the bonus material. Probably my favorite of the bonus material is the one entitled Punch – Dance. It’s a documentary or more of a picture-in-picture of a scene in the movie that plays homage to a scene from the 1984 movie Footloose. The scene parodies Kevin Bacon’s dance scene in the movie and this feature shows Hot Rod and Footloose side by side for comparison. It’s pretty hilarious and worth checking out.

Saturday Night Live has showcased some of the funniest and most unique comedians of the last few decades. Time will tell if Adam Samberg has what it takes to be in the same stratosphere as a Bill Murray, Will Ferrell or Mike Myer. Much like those SNL alumni’s early films, Adam Samberg’s first movie has only found a small selected audience. Let’s see if the future is as golden for Samberg as it has been for many of his fellow SNL comedians before him.

His name is ANDY, not ADAM. It's also "Mike Myers" not "Mike Myer"

I understand enjoying Hot Rod takes a certain sense of humor, but I'd be more inclined to respect your opinion on the matter if you new the name of the guy you are essentially reviewing.
