Dr. Katz Professional Therapist was an animated series that ran for 6 seasons on Comedy Central from 1995 to 1999. The show was a vehicle for stand-up comedians to showcase their work. With The Best of Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist DVD, comedians like Dave Chappelle, Denis Leary, Ray Romano are a few of the comics that find themselves on Dr. Katz’s couch.

With first viewings of the animated series it can be a little jarring because of the animated style called Squigglevision. It’s kind of what it sounds like; all of the animated objects have a constant pulsating squiggly line and are in color, while the rest of the scene is in a static grey tone. The animation is really secondary to the audio content that is the meat and potatoes to the show. Creator and the voice of Dr. Katz, comedian Jonathan Katz saw the vision to find a unique way to present comics work. Each episode showcases a couple comedians as they air their dirty laundry while secretly delivering their stand-up material. In the original show we also had secondary stories but these are mostly gone on this DVD so all we have are the comedians doing what they do best, make us laugh.
The DVD is broken up by sessions so you can go directly to your favorite comic or watch the show in its new edited entirety. Some of your comic options include Arrested Development’s David Cross, Seinfeld’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Rattatouille’s Patton Oswald and Rescue Me’s Denis Leary, to name just a few. Along with the best of, we have some bonus material called Dr. Katz Remembers. It’s a weird little collection of scenes from the show, where the character Dr. Katz remembers everything from characters like his son Ben, his assistant Laura and himself. It’s basically a way to showcase some of the highlights from the show that weren’t the therapy session portions. If you are a fan of the show and enjoyed the subplots then this is something you will want to check out.
Comedy Central through the years has introduced to us some of the funniest comedians of our generation. The Best of Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist was one of those shows that did just that in every episode. Future stars like Dave Chappell, Sarah Silverman and Dave Attell were introduced to masses with their own style of humor at their therapy sessions with Dr. Katz. If you are a fan of stand-up, some fo these comics or remember the show from the late 90’s, then do yourself a fovor and pick the DVD up. If you find this isn’t enough, the whole series is also available on DVD now as well.
